Fire and Stars torch-lit hikes offer a guided way to explore the Maidenhair Fern Trail in winter after dark.

The guided walk follows a 2-kilometre loop through the park, with scheduled stops where Discovery interpreters share information about the trail’s natural features. Each guided hike begins at 7 p.m. and lasts between one and one-and-a-half hours, depending on pace. Visitors are asked to arrive five to ten minutes early, though late arrivals can follow the group by looking for the interpreter’s lantern.

The Fire and Stars experience runs on select evenings between 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m., with guided hikes available on December 19 and 20; January 1, 2, 3, 16 and 17; and February 14 and 15. Participants may also hike independently during those hours. Snowshoes are recommended depending on snowfall, but are not required. Rentals are not available.

All vehicles entering the park must have a daily vehicle permit, which costs $21 per vehicle. Permits can be reserved online up to five days in advance, starting at 7 a.m. A separate reservation is required for the Fire and Stars hike, and visitors must select the “Day Use + Fire and Stars” option when booking. Registration for the guided walk does not guarantee park entry without a valid permit.
