Alberta is poised to commemorate its 121st year as a province with the annual Alberta Day celebrations. The day honours Alberta’s official designation as a province on September 1, 1905.

The free, family-friendly celebrations, organized by the provincial government, will be held at Heritage Park in Calgary on Sunday, Aug. 30, with a full day of music, cultural performances, children’s activities and a drone show to finish the evening.
What to Expect:
You can explore the Historical Village throughout the day while performances bring country, folk, rock, R&B, soul, blues and bluegrass into different corners of the park.
There is also Ukrainian and Indigenous dance, traditional Okinawan drumming and plenty for families who would rather take part than simply watch.
The celebration begins with opening events around 11 a.m. and continues until the 9 p.m. drone show.
Entertainment & Activities:
- The Main Stage starts with Ken Lima-Coelho at 10:45 a.m. and features Trsyub Ukrainian Dance Society, ADEOLUWA, ShimaKaji, Wild Mint Arts, John Wort Hannam, Souls in Rhythm and others. Country artist Kyle McKearney takes the stage at 8 p.m., followed by the drone show at 9 p.m.
- At the Gazebo Stage, you can hear Matt Blais, Evie Marsten, Ella Eva West, Justine Giles, Jaiden Riley, Rome IX, Eden Taylor and Alice Jane.
- Music even follows you onto the train, with performances from Matt Blais, Justine Giles, Jaiden Riley, Evie Marsten, The Crickets and Alice Jane.
- For kids, ACSW arts and crafts run from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., while face painting continues until 7 p.m. Christopher Cool! performs magic at noon and 2 p.m., Puppet Stuff Canada appears from 3 to 4:30 p.m., and Green Fools runs a circus workshop from 3 to 7 p.m. You can also try giant games near Didsbury Band Stand and Indigenous or Chinese arts and crafts in the Kids Zone.
Beyond the live performances, attendees can immerse themselves in the rich, living history spread across 127 acres. The day promises a gamut of activities for all ages, from kid-friendly attractions to a delectable spread of Canadian and international cuisines.
What is free:
General admission to Alberta Day is free, and the Steam Train is included with admission. It operates from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with trips leaving from and returning to Shepard Station.
Advance registration for admission is encouraged.
Free activities also include arts and crafts, face painting, giant games, Indigenous and Chinese arts and crafts, magic shows, puppetry and a circus workshop.
What do you need tickets for:
Though admission is free, special wristbands, available for separate purchase, will be required to access to Heritage Park’s signature Antique Midway and S.S. Moyie rides. Advance bookings for S.S. Moyie ride bracelets and Antique Midway ride bracelets are encouraged due to limited capacity.
If the Antique Midway is on your list, you will need a $15 ride wristband, which gives you unlimited rides for the day. Annual Members and Heritage Club VIPs can receive complimentary bracelets.
A cruise on the S.S. Moyie costs $5 and requires a ticket for a specific sailing time. The dock is behind Shepard Station, about a 20 to 25-minute walk from the entrance, and you should arrive at least 20 minutes before departure.
Canoo tickets do not include Midway bracelets or S.S. Moyie tickets.

How to get there & parking:
There is no general guest parking at Heritage Park on Alberta Day, except for vehicles with a valid handicapped tag.
If you are driving, you can park for free at Anderson CTrain Station or Mount Royal University in Lots A, B, 8 and the East Gate Parkade, subject to availability. Free shuttles run every 10 minutes.
You can also take MAX Teal, MAX Yellow, Route 502 from Heritage LRT Station, or Route 20. Allow extra travel time on the day of the event.
