The City, alongside community partners, is rolling out three main initiatives: the SURGE CITY Hoops Summer Series, Soccer City FC, and outdoor World Cup watch parties. Together, they are designed to turn public spaces into gathering spots for residents of all ages.
Thom Mahler, the City’s Director of Downtown Strategy, says the focus is on making downtown feel more welcoming through accessible recreation. A survey from last year’s basketball program found 80 per cent of families felt it improved the atmosphere in the area.
The SURGE CITY Hoops program returns after drawing more than 1,000 youth in 2025. It will run from June 2 to Sept. 12 at Century Gardens, offering free clinics for ages 8 to 17, led by players and coaches from the Calgary Surge. A three on three tournament is also planned for September.
A new addition this year, Soccer City FC, will take place at Peace Park from June 7 to Sept. 2 on most Sundays. Backed by Cavalry FC and Calgary Wild FC, the program gives young participants access to coaching while building skills and connections.
The lineup also ties into the 2026 Men’s World Cup. Free outdoor watch parties are scheduled at Eau Claire Plaza on June 12, 18 and 24, with the final shown on Stephen Avenue on July 19.
Per the news release, more than 2,000 days of programming have been delivered downtown since 2022, part of a broader push to increase activity, support businesses and create spaces where people feel they belong.
