There are several opportunities for summer fun and adventures in Southampton. The smaller town of Southampton is on the shores of Lake Huron and the south end of the lake’s Bruce Peninsula. The area, in general, is known for its marine heritage and history, which is one of the activities you should do while in Southampton.
In town, there are attractions like the Bruce Museum and historical walking tours. But the history and attractions of Southampton extend way out into the water, too! Chantry Island is located off Southampton’s western shores and is an incredible place to visit, experience, and photograph. Plus, Chantry Island serves as a bird sanctuary, making it an excellent place for birding and nature photography.
Access to Chantry Island
Fortunately, there are local expert tour guides who provide access to Chantry Island from Southampton. Not only do they provide access, but they also offer full Chantry Island tours. Historic Boat Tours to Chantry Island are hosted by the Southampton Marine Heritage Society, and tours are available 7 days a week from June to October.
What to Expect on a Chantry Island Tour
The Marine Heritage Society bring visitors to Chantry Island for exploration and sightseeing. Walking and possibly stair-climbing are involved, so everyone is advised to bring comfortable footwear.
- Tours depart from the Base & Gift Shop where visitors begin a scenic 20-minute cruise on Lake Huron before arriving at the Island. Guides will have knowledge of the shipwrecks below, the boats’ histories, and more.
- Once at Chantry Island, see the manicured gardens, the Light Keeper’s Cottage, and the Chantry Island Lighthouse. It is 107 steps up to the top of the lighthouse, which is open for visitors to get the ultimate views of Lake Huron.
- Expect birds and so many different types! Chantry Island is a Federal Migratory Bird Sanctuary. A few of those species who often make nests around the island and call it their summer home include the great blue heron, great egret, black-crowned night heron, herring gull, ring-billed gull, and double-crested cormorant. Plus, the sanctuary is home to several types of waterfowl like ducks, teals, and pintails.
