If you are interested in racing across a frozen lake this winter, then register for Ice Dice.

Ice Dice is an annual timed driving competition hosted by Calgary Sports Car Club through a driving course on a frozen lake. Weather depending, the club hosts three to four Ice Dice competitions in a year.

Unlike other car racing competitions, participants race one at a time along a defined course.

2022 Ice Dice events are scheduled for January 23rd and February 6th.

If you are interested in participating, both competitions are now open for registration. Registration costs $80 for the public. The cars should have winter tires.

The event scheduled for January 9th was cancelled due to extreme weather.

The race will be held at the northern end of McGregor Lake near Milo.

Previous to 2019/2020, the competitions used to be held at Ghost Lake near Cochrane, the venue of another famous winter sport – ice sailing.

Before COVID-19 pandemic, Calgary Sports Car Club also conducted classroom lectures for novices on how to drive on ice.

Those wanting more adventure can check out Alberta’s winter festival season that features plenty of festivals held on frozen lakes that include ice-driving competitions for cars and snowmobiles.
