Summer brings warm sunny days and lavender blooms!
Spend a summer’s day outdoors, delighting in the calming showering fragrances and taking in the serenity of the purple-hued landscape. Do not forget to shop for lavender goodies!
There are quite a few farms that you can visit, within an hour from Windsor, London, Toronto, Hamilton or Kingston!
Although native to the Mediterranean, there are many varieties of lavender, including English lavenders and their hybrids, which are cold-hardy to Zone 5. Lavender is grown and used for its medicinal and healing effects, unique fragrance, skin products and ability to enhance the flavour of food. The word lavender comes from the Latin word lavare, which means “to wash”. Some of its medicinal benefits include stress reduction, insomnia, bug repellent and respiratory disorders.
So hit the road to enjoy a calming, meditative walk amongst these purple flowers. Visit lavender farms from Late June to Early August, with mid-July being the best (if you can visit during the middle of July)! You can visit select farm stores year-round for lavender products. Few places also celebrate the lushness of blooms in July with a Lavender Festival.
Do yoga, propose, get married, or stay at some of these farms, though not necessarily in this order!
