Los Trompos: Larger-than-Life Spinning Tops to Transform Downtown Calgary This Month

Starting today, downtown Calgary will host an engaging and colourful installation named Los Trompos, or “Spinning Tops.”

Created by Mexican designers Héctor Esrawe and Ignacio Cadena, the installation draws from the timeless children’s toy, the spinning top, to craft a vibrant, communal experience. The designers intend for “Los Trompos” to spark connections and evoke emotions among participants, encouraging playful interaction in a uniquely artistic setting.

This free, interactive exhibition at Lot 6 on 311 8 Street S.W. includes multiple large-scale tops, each wrapped in brightly coloured fabrics in traditional Mexican styles, allowing several people to use them simultaneously.

These tops function both as art pieces and as dynamic platforms for spinning, designed to foster social interaction and collective play.

This event is part of a broader initiative by the city to revitalize its downtown area, aiming to make it a more attractive place for living, working, and recreation.

“Calgary’s future success relies on downtown being a place for Calgarians and visitors to live, work, learn and play,” said Natalie Marchut, Manager of Development & Strategy with Downtown Strategy in a news release.

“Programming and activations support the ‘live’ and ‘play’ aspects of a vibrant downtown by providing a sense of community and opportunities for free and playful gathering for everyone. We’re thrilled to bring Los Trompos to Calgary, a free and inclusive activity that all Calgarians and visitors can enjoy.”

As part of the event, Mexifest will host a Cinco de Mayo Celebration on May 5th. This family-friendly gathering will feature authentic Mexican cuisine, live music, and a DJ from noon to 4 p.m.
