The New Brunswick government has announced a comprehensive action plan to mitigate the impact of U.S. tariffs on the province’s economy.
Premier Susan Holt outlined the four-pillar strategy aimed at supporting workers, businesses, and trade while promoting local products.
“These tariffs will have serious consequences for New Brunswick’s economy, and we must act swiftly to support those affected,” Holt said.
The plan includes financial aid for affected individuals and businesses, efforts to improve interprovincial trade, and an “NB Made” campaign to encourage the purchase of locally produced goods and services.
Key Measures:
- Support for Workers: The government will provide labour market assistance through Working NB and the Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour. A contingency fund via the Regional Development Corporation will offer additional community support.
- Business Relief: Working capital loans of up to $5 million will be available to sustain operations. A $40 million competitiveness and growth program aims to support large export-dependent companies. The New Brunswick Fisheries Fund will receive $4 million, and Opportunities NB will utilize its $30 million strategic assistance budget for contingency planning and market diversification.
- Interprovincial Trade Initiatives: The province will ease labour mobility restrictions, recognize out-of-province workers for a minimum of 120 days, and reduce trade barriers under the Canadian Free Trade Agreement.
- Promotion of Local Products: The “NB Made” campaign will support initiatives like Savour NB and Eat Local NB to strengthen the local economy.
