The program, which has been administered by NB Power, offered rebates to residents purchasing electric vehicles.

Finance and Treasury Board Minister René Legacy, who also oversees the energy portfolio, stated the rebate helped many residents adopt electric vehicles during their initial market rollout and contributed to lowering greenhouse gas emissions. The decision to end the program follows the federal government’s move to pause its own EV rebate initiative.

Residents who purchase an electric vehicle by June 30 will still be eligible for the provincial rebate, with 30 days to submit the necessary documentation to NB Power.

Legacy noted that while the rebate program is winding down, the province will shift its focus to expanding electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Details about future investments in charging stations are expected soon.

The provincial rebate program exceeded its target under the climate change action plan, achieving more than 6% of new light-duty vehicle sales being electric by 2025. There are now close to 7,000 electric vehicles on New Brunswick roads.

With the cost of electric vehicles declining and expected to align with gas-powered vehicle prices in the near future, officials anticipate further growth in EV adoption.
