A major new sports facility is planned for Toronto’s former Downsview Airport lands, bringing together soccer fields, tennis courts, pickleball and padel in one location.
Field Recreation Inc. has announced The Sports Complex at YZD, a 200,000-square-foot indoor and outdoor recreational development just north of Highway 401 and Yorkdale Shopping Centre.
The project will be located within YZD, the 370-acre site being redeveloped from the former Downsview Airport.
What’s Planned for the Sports Complex?
Soccer will take up a substantial portion of the new facility.
Plans include two 75,000-square-foot soccer fields, one indoor and one outdoor, with North Toronto Soccer serving as the anchor tenant.
The organization expects the facility to support everything from recreational and grassroots soccer to competitive programs and opportunities for players with disabilities.
Kenrick Sylvestre, president of North Toronto Soccer, said the development would help expand opportunities for young players.
Tennis, Pickleball and Padel Facilities
Racquet sports players will also have a dedicated space.
A 50,000-square-foot racquet sports facility, operated by Premier Racquet Clubs, will feature:
- Six doubles tennis courts.
- One singles tennis court.
- Six pickleball courts.
- Year-round facilities for lessons, programs and recreational play.
The development also includes plans for one of Canada’s largest dedicated padel destinations.
Karl Hale, owner and operator of Premier Racquet Clubs, said the facility will provide opportunities for players of different ages and skill levels to participate in tennis and pickleball.
Founding memberships for Premier Racquet Clubs at The Sports Complex are now available.
Per the news release, the project comes as recreational organizations face increasing demand for places to play.
“Across Toronto, demand for sports fields and court space continues to outpace supply,” said Robert Ortali, founder of Field Recreation Inc.
The proposed complex aims to provide additional year-round recreation space for residents, sports organizations and community programs.
