New Brunswick Moves to End Vehicle Registration Stickers

New Brunswick has introduced legislation to eliminate the use of vehicle registration stickers.

If approved, the amendments to the Motor Vehicle Act and related regulations would come into effect next spring. The changes would apply to all vehicles, including commercial and off-road types.

While physical stickers would be discontinued, annual registration renewals would still be mandatory, with enforcement to be carried out through electronic verification.

Local Government Minister Aaron Kennedy, who also oversees Service New Brunswick, stated that the move aligns with technological advancements and seeks to streamline the process for residents. According to Kennedy, the elimination of licence plate stickers is expected to lower costs and reduce time spent on renewals.

To assist vehicle owners in keeping track of their registration status, reminder notices will continue to be issued by mail and email, with text message alerts set to be introduced in the coming weeks.

Under the proposed system, individuals renewing their vehicle registration online would be able to either print their registration certificates immediately after payment or opt to receive them by mail. Registrations can also be renewed in person at Service New Brunswick centres or by calling 1-888-762-8600.

Ontario eliminated both licence plate renewal fees and licence plate stickers in March 2022.
