Ontario is eliminating licence plate renewal fees and the requirement to have a licence plate sticker for passenger vehicles, light-duty trucks, motorcycles and mopeds, effective March 13, 2022.
Renewal fees will also be eliminated for passenger, light duty commercial vehicles, motorcycles and mopeds that are owned by a company or business. Renewal fees and requirements for licence plate stickers for heavy commercial vehicles and snowmobiles will remain unchanged.
The province will issue a refund to eligible individual owners of vehicles for the licence plate renewal fees paid since March 2020. The government says no refunds will be given for the period of March 2020 to March 2022 for vehicles owned by companies or businesses.
“As the cost of living continues to go up, our government is cutting costs for families to make life more affordable,” said Premier Doug Ford in a statement. “Eliminating the fee to renew your licence plate and refunding the cost of doing so for the past two years is a concrete way we can put and keep more money in the pockets of hard-working Ontarians.”
The province says vehicle owners are still required to renew their licence plate every one or two years at no cost to confirm their automobile insurance is valid and pay any outstanding Highway 407 tolls and other municipal fines.
Ontario is investing in Automated Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) technology that can read thousands of licence plates per minute allowing officers to process more information on licence plates. As per the news release, ALPR has the capability of capturing vehicles of interest such as amber alerts, drivers with a suspended licence, and stolen vehicles.
Quebec, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories, Manitoba and Alberta have also removed physical licence plate stickers.
HOW TO GET A REFUND

Credit: Ontario.ca
Who will be refunded: All licence plate sticker fees paid between March 1, 2020 and March 12, 2022 for vehicles owned by individuals will be refunded.
The elimination of renewal fees will save vehicle owners $120 a year in southern Ontario and $60 a year in Northern Ontario for passenger and light commercial vehicles.
According to the news release, eligible individual owners of vehicles will be refunded the licence plate renewal fees paid since March 2020 after the government passes red tape legislation. The province says vehicle owners will receive a cheque in the mail starting at the end of March and throughout the month of April.
To receive a refund cheque, vehicle owners must pay any outstanding fees, fines or tolls. Those who have moved recently will need to confirm that their address information on their vehicle permit or driver’s licence is up-to-date at Ontario.ca/AddressChange by March 7, 2022.
If you moved to another province, territory or country, you will need to write a letter and mail it to Ontario Shared Services Revenue and Billing Management LCS Operations, 159 Cedar Street, 6th Floor, Suite 600, Sudbury, Ontario, P3E 6A5.
The letter should include your new mailing address, your Ontario driver’s licence number, or your name and date of birth, a photocopy of either your new driver’s licence, issued by the new licensing authority where you currently live and which shows the date of issue, or a confirmation letter from the licensing authority where you live, which says that you are now a licensed driver in that place and includes the date that you surrendered your Ontario driver’s licence.

Is there a form to fill out to get my sticker refund that I have to fill out to get my refund on my plates.
I have moved to Alberta just this month. I received a cheque from the government of Ontario for the renewal fees. Can I also get a refund if I return the actual license plates? Also can I get a refund for my drivers license?
My lom got hers but only $50. We love on Toronto and paid $120
people look at the examples on line. if you bought a sticker in Feb. 2020. then starting march 2020 its $10 for every month. so from march 2020 to Feb. 2021. then Feb. 2021 to Feb. 2022. that’s $120+$110 you should get.
you only needed to update the address if you moved.
I got my refund cheque today and the letter stated the refund was from March 2020 to present. My cheque was issued for $30.00???? Anyone have any idea how that was calculated?.
This must be an error. Please contact Service Ontario at 1-888-333-0049.
According to the Ontario website, you should receive $60 or $120 per year depending on the place you live.
As per my understanding, if in Southern Ontario – $240+10 per any extra month on your sticker after March 1, 2022. Say May 2022 – $240+20 = $260 (what I received).
We have 2 vehicles. Got a cheque for them both but for only one year.
I got my cheque yesterday. I’ve lived at the same address for 11 years and didn’t need to verify it. I have two cars in my name, one that I drive and one that my daughter drives. I was refunded the amount I paid for both stickers back to March 2020 and any amount that I’d paid into the future for those sticker.
Stickers paid by someone who has passed away, does the estate get that refund?
Another waste of online life as nobody has a clue about same address sticker refunds. Even the daily news said you must go online and register and it’s a dead end when trying. Pitiful government.
Will Alberta get this rebate as well? Or is this just Ontario?
What about the fact i just moved out of province and i had already pre -bought my sticker through to 2023….
I paid for a 2023 sticker at $120.00 Do I get the $120.00 for
the year 2023?
Does this include stickers for brand new vehicles issued in this period?
IF MY HUSBAND AND I OWN A VEHICLE EACH, BUT THEY’RE BOTH IN MY NAME, WILL I RECEIVE A CHEQUE COVERING BOTH OF THEM/
My understanding is that the March 2920 is taken as the start since lockdown was declared during that month.
Go to address change if your living , mailing address needs correction.if everything on your licence and vehicle ownership is correct , dont do anything.your refund will come to your address they have on file which should match your vehicle ownership , Drivers licence address.
It would be helpful if you included to answers so we don’t have to ask individually.
I have not moved and have no outstanding charges. Is there anything I have to do?
I just got a new car and sold my old, will I still get a refund for the sticker I paid on my old car from March 2020 till the day I sold the car?
my pale sticker is due for renw in feb 2022-do i still need to renew by apr 1 2022 and wait for a refund?
FYI, for those people that wonder about refunds for January and February of 2020, don’t worry about it. Every one will get a refund for 2 years. For people who had to renew in Jan and Feb, you will get refunds for Jan/Feb 2021 and Jan/Feb 2022. Those people that had to pay in March and later, will get refunds for 2020 and 2021 (because those months in 2022 haven’t happened yet).
That being said, I too am confused about the updating address thing when the info hasn’t changed.
What is needed to be done on my part, If my address and all information on my license and sticker is up to date.
So awesome though, Always kept up to date, since Service Ont. remained open throughout the rough times for us..Appreciate every bit of help we can get..Hopefully will equal out to two years, not sure but be glad just for one nonetheless..
same here all my drivers license is up to date , what do i still need to do anything to get a refund cause clicking change my address doesn’t sound wright when all my info is good
Why do people who paid Jan and feb 2020. Not get reimbursed???
my birthdate is january 31 and I paid $ 120.00 for the year 2020, my wife birthday is february 11 and she paid $ 240.00 for 2 years in 2020. Wy is that she and I are going to lose $ 240 for 2020 wy don’t they start to give refund for the year of 2020 starting yanuary the first.
Joanne Scott,
You will get refunded from March 2020 until now so you will get a full year plus 1 month if you just bought the 2023 sticker then you will get that back too.
What about people who who own two or three cars or more why is it caped $125 per year or there abouts
I moved out of the province , how can I get my refund?
Same question. If I haven’t moved and my address on my license and permit portion do I need to do anything? I started going through the motions then stopped. I am sure there will be some additional clarity in the next couple of days.
Not fare for people like myself paid for it in Feb and not getting the refund. Why is that😡. Ridiculous. Change it to Jan 2020.
2020 was in southern Ontario as of July 2021 in northern Ontario so do I get 120 for 2020 and 60 for 2021?
Hardly seems fair that those individuals that were required to renew in the first 2 months of 2020 will not receive a refund, while everyone else with renewal dates from March 1 2020 will receive their refunds for that same year.
well i moved but the license bureauy has my new address so this shouldnt be a problem as i go to the website it doesnt recognize either of my addresses anyway what a scam agian aeh Douggie putting peoel through hell and stress to get money back so easily taken over years
The Government web site will NOT recognize the same home address on file as a New address if you hit change my address.
You will get a fail message.
One Can only assume that if you haven’t moved then you need not change your address.
What is needed to be done on my part, If my address and all information on my license and sticker is up to date.
it sounds like the refund cheques will be issued automatically, if you have not moved, you do not need to do anything.
If my address is the same do I still have to press change my address? If not what do I do
