CFIA: Onions Recalled Due to Salmonella Contamination

Canadian Food Inspection Agency has issued a recall for whole raw onions (red, yellow, and white), produce of the state of Chihuahua, Mexico from the marketplace due to possible Salmonella contamination.

The recall was first issued in the U.S.A. by the exporter, Prosource Produce LLC of Hailey, Idaho.

As per the news release, the onions have been sold in Ontario and Quebec and may have been distributed in other provinces and territories.

CFIA says these onions imported between July 1, 2021 and August 31, 2021 may have been sold in bulk or in smaller packages with or without a label and may not bear the same brand or product names.

CFIA is asking Canadians not to consume these onions or foods containing these raw onions. It should be returned to the store or thrown out.

Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick.

Symptoms of a Salmonella infection, called salmonellosis, include: fever, chills, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, headache, nausea, vomiting and typically start 6 to 72 hours after exposure to Salmonella bacteria from an infected animal, person or contaminated product.

As of now, there have been no reported illnesses in Canada associated with the consumption of these onions.
