Ontario Advances GO Train Service Extension to Bowmanville

The Ontario government has taken a significant step towards expanding transit options by awarding a contract to Bowmanville Construction Partners (BCP) for early stage infrastructure planning on the Bowmanville Extension. This project is part of the province’s plan to enhance GO train service and connect communities in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.

With an investment of $730 million, the Lakeshore East GO line will be extended further into Durham Region, ultimately bringing two-way all-day GO train service to Bowmanville. This expansion aims to reduce travel times and congestion while providing faster and more reliable transit options for commuters.

Per the news release, upon completion of the Bowmanville Extension, it will reduce the travel time from Bowmanville to Union Station by 15 minutes, benefiting countless commuters. The extension will also bring convenience to the doorstep of approximately 19,000 individuals and 10,400 job opportunities, with stations within 800 meters of their locations by 2041. The project encompasses various improvements, including the addition of new tracks, signals, seven bridges, and upgrades to at-grade crossings.

This development is part of the broader GO expansion program, ensuring that the Lakeshore East Line provides efficient service throughout the day, with a peak weekday frequency every 30 minutes between Bowmanville and Union Station.

Caroline Mulroney, Minister of Transportation, emphasized that this transit expansion would drive economic growth, combat gridlock, and attract more jobs and investments to Ontario.

A virtual Public Information Centre is ongoing for the Bowmanville Extension Environmental Project Report (ERP) Addendum, allowing the public to review and provide comments until June 21, 2023.
