OPG recently signed an agreement to purchase the former General Motors of Canada building and surrounding lands in Durham Region. This 285,000-square-foot building, located at 1908 Colonel Sam Drive in Oshawa, will serve as the company’s new corporate headquarters.

OPG had previously planned to construct a new headquarters in Clarington Energy Park.

According to the news release, the GM building will be retrofitted prior to occupancy in late 2024. OPG says its decision to establish its headquarters in Oshawa is a testament to the region’s growing reputation as an international destination for clean energy technology.

OPG now plans to re-envision the Darlington Energy Complex as a world-class centre of excellence for learning, skills training, and innovation in the clean energy field in the coming years.

Welcoming the news which “solidifies Durham Region’s position as the Clean Energy Capital of Canada,” John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham said in a statement, “This positive news will leave an economic impact for the region as a whole—one that will be felt for decades. It’s a testament to the opportunities here in Durham Region. It’s a great place to invest, offering innovative thinkers, growth opportunities, and partnerships driving business.”
