Ontario is preparing to raise speed limits on a much larger share of its provincial highway network, moving more routes from 100 km/h to 110 km/h.
The province says the latest change will cover an additional 938 kilometres of highways. Right now, 873 kilometres are already posted at 110 km/h. Once the new limits are in place, nearly 89 per cent of Ontario’s highway network will have a 110 km/h posted limit, up from 43 per cent today.
The rollout begins June 26 on sections of Highways 401 and 416 in eastern Ontario. Other sections will follow on the QEW and Highways 400, 401, 402, 403, 416 and 417. The province expects the increases to take effect gradually through September 30, 2026.
For drivers, the difference could be noticeable on longer trips. The government says a trip from Sarnia to Toronto could be nearly 20 minutes shorter, while a trip from Toronto to Ottawa could save close to half an hour.
Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria said the move is part of Ontario’s broader effort to keep people and goods moving, alongside a $31-billion plan to build, repair and expand highways, roads and bridges over 10 years.
The province says higher limits will only be used on highways that have been reviewed and are designed to safely handle the change. It also notes that most of Ontario’s freeway network was originally engineered for a posted speed of 110 km/h.
Future freeways, including Highways 413, 425, 7 between Kitchener and Guelph, and 69, will also be designed for 110 km/h limits.
