Ottawa’s Parliament Hill is about to become the setting for a unique event: a giant game of human chess.

On Sunday, May 10 2026, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., the grounds in front of the Peace Tower will turn into a life-sized chessboard for a special Mother’s Day event.
Participants are invited to dress up as their favourite chess piece and take part in 45-minute games. Those who would rather watch the action unfold are equally welcome to join the crowd. The event is free to attend, with no tickets required — just show up and be part of the spectacle.
More than just a playful afternoon, the live chess matches aim to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease. The event supports both the Alzheimer Society of Canada and the Alzheimer Society of Leeds, Lanark, Grenville. Donations are encouraged, with direct contributions going to the Lanark Leeds Grenville chapter.
Anyone interested in being a part of the game can sign up through the event’s Contact Us page by providing their name, contact information, chess piece preference, and a brief note about their connection to or interest in chess.
Whether you’re a chess enthusiast, a supporter of Alzheimer’s research, or simply looking for a unique way to spend Mother’s Day, Parliament Hill promises a memorable afternoon.
