The Vatican today announced that Pope Francis will be visiting Canada in July.
According to the Holy See Press Office, the head of the Catholic Church will be travelling to Edmonton, Québec and Iqaluit from July 24th to 30th.
The visit follows invitations from Canadian authorities and indigenous communities.

Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops says the historic visit will be focused on Indigenous healing and reconciliation. Pope Francis apologized for the Catholic Church’s role in Canada’s residential school system last month.
The CCCB says the locations were chosen to limit travel for the Pope while “allowing an opportunity for both intimate and public encounters, drawing on participation from all regions of the country.”
As per the CCCB press release, Edmonton has the second largest number of Indigenous Peoples living in urban Canadian centres and Alberta has the most residential schools (25) of any province or territory in Canada. Inuit delegates personally invited Pope Francis to visit the North during their meetings in March, while Quebec City will act as an eastern hub for those who may wish to travel to see Pope Francis.
Further information about the trip detailing specific sites will be developed in dialogue with Indigenous partners at the local and national levels and will be made available in the coming weeks.
This is the fourth papal journey to Canada and the first since Saint John Paul II’s visit in 2002.
