This initiative, announced by Health Minister Bruce Fitch, aims to enhance access to healthcare services and improve early cancer detection among a younger demographic.

Breast cancer remains the most diagnosed form of cancer and the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths among Canadian women. Recognizing the aggressive nature of breast cancer in younger, premenopausal individuals, the government emphasizes that early detection is crucial for increasing survival rates.

Sherry Wilson, the minister responsible for women’s equality, highlighted the importance of this policy in promoting better health outcomes and a higher quality of life for patients and their families.

“Thank you to the New Brunswick government for making this small but important policy change that will have a big, positive impact on patients and the people who love them,” said Kathy Kaufield, a breast cancer survivor from Quispamsis and longtime advocate for improved breast screening in a news release.

“Not only will individuals in their 40s now have the opportunity to get screened, but they will also now have access to their breast density category, which will empower them to make informed decisions about their breast health going forward.”

Residents aged 40-74 who have not shown symptoms or been previously diagnosed with breast cancer are eligible to self-refer for screening at local facilities. Further details about the program can be found online or by calling the dedicated helpline at 1-844-777-3443.
