This historic site cannot be accessed by road! Of course, this means that you may want to cross country ski or snowshoe in order to enjoy getting to the lodge. If you and your date fall into that group of people, but you still want to enjoy a winter getaway, why not go to Vista Ridge and take one of their Adult Never Ever Group classes? These classes are designed to be fun and educational so that you can learn to ski without feeling like an idiot. Come back to Fort McMurray and spend the night in Fort Mac’s only “boutique” hotel, the Chez Dube.
Drumheller is located in the badlands of Alberta. Known for the Royal Tyrrell Museum and being the town of dinosaurs, Drumheller is actually an amazing place to explore in the wintertime. Anyone who loves nature and good scenery should come here during the winter at least once in their lifetime. The hoodoos, the canyons, the Drumheller trail, it is all made even more beautiful during the wintertime, especially right after (or even during) it snows. Choose from a number of hotels to stay in, and enjoy dining at local restaurants like Sublime Food and Wine, Ivy’s Awesome Kitchen and Bernie and the Boys Bistro.

Explore the Narnia like landscape in the middle of Edmonton’s famous park and then join in for some of the most best winter festivals in Alberta like Ice on Whyte, or Silver Skate Festival- from ice carving competitions and lessons, to live blues music, to crafts and activities, and bonfires you will not be disappointed! To up the romance factor, why not stay at one of the most romantic hotels in the entire province, Hotel Macdonald?
Banff is one of the most famous mountain towns in Alberta, and for good reason. This picturesque town is perfect for a romantic getaway, no matter if you only have a day or more than a week. Go on a horse drawn sleigh ride, the Banff Gondola, and a end your day with a dip at the hot springs. There are so many hotels and lodges to stay at, as well as mountains to ski or snowboard on. Ski-joring in Kananaskis Country
If you just can’t stand the thought of leaving your child at home for a romantic weekend getaway, maybe you can just bring them with you. Mad Dogs and Englishmen can teach you how to combine two famous winter pastimes: skiing and dog sledding. Skijoring is a Scandinavian tradition that is just beginning to grow in popularity in Alberta. Mad Dogs and Englishmen can even teach you and your dog how to work together to enjoy this winter sport. After that, continue to explore one of the most beautiful regions in Alberta however you see fit!
Visit Canmore for a weekend or an entire week to enjoy the romantic Rundle Cliffs Luxury Mountain Lodge and try your hand at any number of winter activities. Canmore has the advantage being less touristy and less busy than some of the more recognizable Mountain names on the list.
Not only is Slave Lake a fantastic getaway if you are into snowmobiling, but if you would like to explore the area on foot, the Boreal Centre provides free snowshoe rentals, which is a pretty awesome way to try out a new activity. Toniroz Grill and Restaurant is a fantastic choice for food while in Slave Lake, and as for a place to sleep, there are few options to choose from.
Peace River is known for its awesome Northern Spirit Light Show, which allows you to view the beautiful lights while riding on a horse drawn sleigh. If that isn’t enough of a draw for you, make sure to also check out the Sawridge Inn which has fantastic dining options as well as entertainment right on site.
Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park
If an outdoor wilderness adventure is your idea of a romantic getaway, check out Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park. With outdoor camping available, you can stay here as long as you can last! Snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and a bird conservatory are all available at the park, making it a great place for the outdoor enthusiast to come, explore, and relax.
Elk Island National Park
Elk Island Provincial Park is a romantic winter weekend getaway for active couples just waiting to happen. Start with any number of drop in activities including building winter shelters, learning about winter survival, viewing wildlife displays, and ice skating. Continue into the evening with a romantic snowshoeing and stargazing adventure that ends with a fire under the stars. Head to Fort Saskatchewan for the night and dine at The Downtown Diner before relaxing at the Kanata Inn, and then head back to Elk Island for more snowy adventures in the morning.
Get away from the bright city lights and head east of Edmonton. You’ll find that the sky shines brighter over here, so pack a blanket, some warm clothes, a camera, some hot chocolate and get ready for the show. You’ll be mesmerized. Work up an appetite at Hidden Valley Ski Resort, forty five minutes from Medicine Hat and then satisfy your hunger at any number of fantastic local restaurants. Finish off your day at the Friendz of Ours Bed and Breakfast, and then, if you’d like, do it all again the next day!
