Approximately 120 participants, forming 30 teams, are gearing up to race on January 245, at 9 a.m., in their homemade bobsleds down a challenging eight-block stretch of Spokane Street. Each team, comprising four members, will navigate their sleds, weighing between 600-800 lbs, in what has become a beloved tradition in the region.
The race forms part of Rossland’s Winter Carnival, the busiest weekend of the year. The nostalgic charm of the event lies in its sleds, many of which date back to the mid-20th century.
Nostalgic sleds like Woody’s Tire, Iron Maiden, and Bobbi’s Bus,are set to compete, with speeds reaching up to 70 km/h.
The preparations for the Saturday event kick off on Thursday with sled inspections, registration, and a betting event at the Calcutta on Thursday, January 22, at the Rossland Legion. Volunteers are invited to join the race-day team with a briefing at 8 a.m.
Race day will culminate in a noon award ceremony in the Olaus Ice Palace beer garden, coinciding with the last day of Blizzard Music Festival.
