Scam: Letter Threatens Death in 24 Hours If Bitcoin Payment Not Received

RCMP is warning people about a threatening letter scam that requests the receiver of the letter to send Bitcoin by scanning a QR Code at the bottom of the letter before bad things happen to them.

The police say a white powder was also included in the letter.

According to the press release, RCMP have received numerous reports of letters received in the Coquitlam area.

The letter reads, “Congratulations! You are now in possession of a controlled substance. Payment for this product is now due!”

The letter threatened recipients of hiding fentanyl in Amazon packages and included death and property threats if the recipient did not send 0.05 bitcoin. Coquitlam RCMP believes this letter to be a mass production sent to multiple addresses, as all letters appear identical.

The RCMP are currently investigating the letters with the help of their partners at Canada Post.

Though none of the letters have resulted in anyone being harmed from the white powder inside the letter, RCMP says the public can continue to keep themselves safe by doing the following:

  • Immediately put the letter, envelope and contents in a sealable bag, either a sandwich bag or freezer bag;
  • Sanitize the area where you opened the letter;
  • Wash you hands; and
  • Call the police about the letter.

RCMP is asking those who have recievd the letter to contact the Coquitlam RCMP.
