Ski Hills Closed: Outdoor Recreational Activities Allowed During Ontario Lockdown Starting Dec 26th

All of Ontario will go into lockdown on Boxing Day as the province tries to bring soaring COVID-19 cases under control.

The lockdown will remain in place for southern Ontario until Jan. 23, but will lift for northern Ontario on Jan. 9.

As per the document released, ski hills will be closed during the lockdown period. Drive-in or drive-through events are also not permitted.

Tobogganing hills, skating trails, snowmobile, cross country, dogsledding, ice-skating and snow-shoe trails are allowed to open.

 

These are the outdoor recreational amenities permitted to open during the lockdown:

  • Parks and recreational areas
  • Baseball diamonds
  • Batting cages
  • Soccer, football and sports fields
  • Tennis, platform tennis, table tennis and pickleball courts
  • Basketball courts
  • BMX parks
  • Skate parks
  • Golf courses and driving ranges
  • Frisbee golf locations
  • Cycling tracks and bike trails
  • Horse riding facilities
  • Shooting ranges, including those operated by rod and gun clubs
  • Ice rinks
  • Snowmobile, cross country, dogsledding, ice-skating and snow-shoe trails
  • Playgrounds
  • Portions of parks or recreational areas containing outdoor fitness equipment
  • Tobogganing hills and skating trails

As per the document, a permitted outdoor recreational amenity may only open if:

  • Any person who enters or uses the amenity maintains a physical distance of at least two metres from other person using the amenity (excluding
    members of the same household)
  • Team sports, or other sports or games where people may come within two metres of each other, are not practiced or played within the amenity

Any locker rooms, change rooms, showers and clubhouses remain closed, except to the extent they provide access to equipment storage, a washroom
or a portion of the amenity that is used to provide first aid.

      Skating is fine, skiing isn’t. This virus seems very activity specific, what a joke.

      No need to close ski hills if the can manage social interaction with customers.
      Instead force a travel ban between regions in relation to postal codes within 50km.

      For Province to confer with Ski Areas that it was/is a go to invest to run this season and then back track suddenly very costly..some will fold!

      Awesome that golf courses can stay open in ontario in the winter but skiing is not on the list……..unbelievable stupidity!

      Very disappointed to hear that ski hills in Ontario are ordered to close during the province-wide lockdown coming up. Fully understand the reasons for the lockdown, however Alberta did not close the ski hills. Skiing is one of the very few activities that can be managed during these times.
