The coin is sourced entirely from the Detour Lake mine, owned by Agnico Eagle, located in the Abitibi Greenstone Belt in Northern Ontario.
The coin displays intricate design features, including a detailed engraving of a Sugar Maple leaf by Walter Ott, which is central to the Mint’s Maple Leaf bullion series.

Surrounding this are precisely machined radial lines and a micro-engraved, maple leaf-shaped security mark that contains the engraving “24,” visible only under magnification, indicating the coin’s year of issue.

Alongside these features, a privy mark depicts a hand cradling a globe, symbolizing the coin’s pure and singular source.
Each coin is sealed within a credit card-style package that includes a signed certificate of purity and authenticity by the Mint’s Chief Assayer. The packaging also incorporates Bullion DNATM technology to further authenticate and protect the coin.
Agnico Eagle, which has been operating since 1957, is Canada’s largest gold miner and the third-largest gold producer globally. According to the media release, the Detour Lake mine, located in the Abitibi Greenstone Belt in Northern Ontario, is the largest gold-producing mine in Canada, with mineral gold reserves totalling 19.9 million ounces. The mine is expected to continue operations beyond 2054.
The 2024 $50 1 oz. 99.99% pure gold coin is available to Costco Canada members, both in select stores and online. Those interested in buying should remember that while the face value of the coin is $50, it is a bullion and retails for a little more than 1 ounce of gold value (currently >$3500).
