Statistics Canada is preparing for its next national census and is recruiting about 32,000 workers across the country to support the effort.
Census employees are responsible for gathering demographic, social, and economic information that helps shape decisions on services such as health care, housing, education, transportation, and community planning.
Available Roles and Pay
The agency is hiring for a range of temporary field positions, including enumerators and supervisory roles such as crew leaders.
Employment periods vary by role and location, with work spanning from March to July 2026. Most positions involve in-person data collection, requiring workers to visit households door to door to obtain completed census questionnaires.
Enumerators, who make up the majority of hires, are expected to work an average of at least 20 hours per week, primarily in the evenings and on weekends. They are paid $25.87 per hour and may claim authorized expenses such as mileage and parking.
Crew leaders supervise teams of enumerators, assist with training, and manage collection activities in assigned areas. These supervisory roles require full-time availability, including weekends, and pay $31.32 per hour, plus authorized expenses.

Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must be at least the age of majority in their province or territory, live in Canada with a Canadian home address, and be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a valid work permit. The age of majority is 18 in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and Saskatchewan, and 19 in British Columbia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Yukon.
Hiring Process and Training
The hiring process includes screening, reference checks, and security clearance, with interviews required for crew leader roles. Mandatory training is paid, and bilingualism is not required unless applying for a designated bilingual area.
Statistics Canada notes that census work is not office-based and flexibility is essential, as workloads vary by location.
