The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) and Art Toronto will mark World Dumpling Day in Toronto with food, art, and a travel giveaway.
On Friday, September 26, 2,000 dumplings will be served free of charge at Dim Sum King, located at 421 Dundas St. W. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., while supplies last.
Attendees who register on-site will also be entered into a contest for a trip to Hong Kong. The prize includes round-trip airfare for two on Cathay Pacific Airways and accommodation at a four-star hotel.
The celebration extends to the arts later in the fall. Montreal artist Karen Tam will debut a site-specific installation at Art Toronto 2025, scheduled for October 23 to 26. Commissioned by the HKTB, Tam’s 20-by-20-foot work will recreate a Chinatown curio shop. The project draws on her practice of reimagining cultural spaces such as restaurants and shops, and it examines themes of migration and memory.
Tam holds an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a PhD in Cultural Studies from Goldsmiths, University of London. Her Art Toronto installation will incorporate objects such as jade trinkets, beadwork, embroidery, and porcelain, evoking the atmosphere of a Hong Kong market.
According to the HKTB, Hong Kong is home to more than 17,000 licensed restaurants, ranging from dim sum teahouses to Michelin-starred establishments. The city also has a significant arts presence, with Art Basel Hong Kong and the West Kowloon Cultural District among its major cultural landmarks.
