Following the resignation of John Tory, the City Clerk has set a date for the mayoral by-election.
According to the news release, the by-election will take place on Monday, June 26 subject to City Council declaring the vacancy and passing a bylaw requiring a by-election at its meeting from March 29 to 31.
Mayoral by-election dates are as follows:
- Nominations will open Monday, April 3 at 8:30 a.m.
- Nominations will close Friday, May 12 at 2 p.m.
- Advance voting will take place Thursday, June 8 to Tuesday, June 13
- By-election will be held Monday, June 26
Toronto residents will also have the option to vote by mail.
The City Clerk independently determines the timing of by-elections according to the Municipal Elections Act, setting the nomination day 30-60 days after the vacancy bylaw and holding the by-election 45 days later.
According to the news release, the City Clerk saw it best to inform candidates and electors early and begin preparations by announcing dates early before the bylaw passage due to the current circumstances.
The by-election for Mayor of Toronto requires the same administrative efforts as a general election, with an estimated budget of $13 million compared to the $14.5 million spent on the October 2022 general election.
