The call comes amid escalating tariffs between the two countries.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, Carney and Trump agreed to begin comprehensive negotiations on a new economic and security relationship following Canada’s upcoming federal election. In the meantime, Canadian Minister Dominic LeBlanc and U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick will intensify discussions to address immediate concerns.

Carney informed Trump of his intention to focus on the election campaign in the coming weeks and emphasized his commitment to defending Canadian interests. He also stated that Canada would implement retaliatory tariffs in response to new U.S. trade measures announced on April 2, 2025.

President Trump acknowledged the call on his social media platform Truth Social, stating that he spoke with “Prime Minister Mark Carney, of Canada”, describing the call as “extremely productive” and noting that both leaders plan to meet shortly after the election.

It seems like a tone shift from Trump, as he almost always referred to Justin Trudeau as Governor.
