The full reopening marks the return of one of British Columbia’s most visited backcountry hiking destinations, following extensive trail repairs over the past three years.

Tent pad bookings will be available for arrivals starting June 26, the scheduled reopening date for the entire 23-kilometre trail. Reservations will be required until September 29, 2025.

The trail, situated between Valemount and Jasper, was closed in June 2021 after severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall following a heat dome. The damage included the loss of infrastructure such as bridges, tent pads, and picnic areas.

Restoration has taken place in three phases. The first, completed in 2023, reopened the trail from the parking lot to Kinney Lake campground. The second phase, finished in 2024, included trail realignment and new bridges between Kinney Lake and Whitehorn campground. The final phase restored the section from Whitehorn to Berg Lake, relocating parts of the trail to avoid flood-prone areas. The total cost of the project is estimated at $5 million.

Between May 15 and June 25, Kinney Lake and Whitehorn Campgrounds will be accessible on a first-come, first-served basis, with permits available at the Mount Robson Welcome Centre. The trail remains open during winter for recreational use.

Mount Robson Park, established in 1913, is British Columbia’s second-oldest provincial park and protects the headwaters of the Fraser River. The Berg Lake Trail gains 800 metres in elevation and attracts about 20,000 backcountry visitors annually. Mount Robson, standing at 3,954 metres, is the tallest peak in the Canadian Rockies.
