This year, you can enjoy a new experience on the skateway – imbibe a unique Ottawa winter cocktail on the famous winter attraction.
National Capital Commission has chosen Dunrobin Distilleries to serve spirits to skaters on the Rideau Canal.
Dunrobin to celebrate this milestone have created a special cocktail specifically for the skateway patio called the “Northern Spike” made from hot maple sap and a shot of Dunrobin’s award-winning Canadian whisky.
“We have been overwhelmed by the positive response we have received from skaters who have tried our Northern Spike or line of spirits for the first time” said Mark Watson co-founder of Dunrobin on the opening day of the first distillery to serve premium locally made spirits at the Rideau Skateway. “Covid has been challenging for everyone and to see people’s eyes light up when they realize they can now also enjoy an alcoholic drink on the canal, makes us feel even more a part of our community.”
In addition to “Northern Spike”, skaters can enjoy their full line of locally handcrafted spirits with single-shot tastings of their popular Earl Grey Gin, Artisanal Vodka and Gin, as well as their recently released Limoncello and Canadian Whisky.
The Dunrobin Cocktail kiosk is operating on the ice, from a customized “Airstream” Caravan at the Concord Rest Area of the skateway.
Nicknamed “Spirit of Exploration” for its wide range of products that use ingredients from their own organic farm, Dunrobin Distilleries Ltd., a premium artisanal craft distillery located in rural Ottawa, was founded in 2017 by Adrian Spitzer & Mark Watson.

What: Known as “The Spirit of Exploration”, Dunrobin Distilleriesis the first distillery to serve spirits to skaters on the Rideau Canal. You can enjoy a truly unique Ottawa winter cocktail, called the Northern Spike in addition to single-shot tastings of Earl Grey Gin, Artisanal Vodka and Gin, Limoncello and Canadian Whisky.
When: Rideau Canal Skateway Season, Monday to Wednesday and Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm and Thursday thru Saturday from 11 am to 8 pm.
Where: The Dunrobin Cocktail kiosk is operating on the ice, from a customized “Airstream” Caravan, provided by Country Club Caravan. It is located on the Rideau Canal Skateway at the Concord Rest Area between the NAC and the Pretoria Bridge. (Distance markers 1.2km and 1.4km.)
