Wasaga Beach is looking beyond its familiar role as an Ontario summer getaway.

The Town has unveiled the Destination Wasaga Master Plan, a long-term proposal to turn the beachfront, downtown and surrounding natural areas into a four-season recreation and nature-based destination. The plan covers six connected zones: the Main End, the Point and River Mouth, Discovery Corridor, Main Street Corridor, West End and Wasaga Beach Provincial Park.

This is still a vision rather than a package of approved construction projects. Individual pieces would need funding, technical work and the required planning, environmental and regulatory approvals before moving ahead.

Here are some of the biggest changes being proposed:

  • Replace large surface parking lots with Park & Play. Parking could move into a purpose-built structure, freeing valuable beachfront land. The building is envisioned with businesses and recreation at ground level and a rooftop terrace overlooking Georgian Bay.
  • A new Dardanella and a major outdoor performance venue. The historic Dardanella would be reimagined as a modern, accessible year-round performance space while retaining its dance-hall connection. A separate waterfront performance shell, inspired by San Diego’s Rady Shell, is also proposed for concerts, festivals and large outdoor events.

  • A pedestrian bridge across the Nottawasaga River. One of the most noticeable changes could be a bridge at the river mouth linking Wasaga Beach’s 14-kilometre shoreline from end to end. It would be part of a wider network of boardwalks, trails and viewing areas.

  • A marina and new riverfront promenade. Underused parking areas along Jenetta Street could become a transient marina and promenade, giving visiting boaters access to the Main End and connecting the riverfront with restaurants, shops, events, cycling routes and the beach.

  • More ways to use Wasaga Beach Provincial Park year-round. The plan looks beyond the shoreline to the park’s 18-square-kilometre non-beachfront area. Ideas include trails, lookouts, accessible boardwalks, winter recreation, camping and other nature-based activities, along with connections to an enhanced Nordic Centre and proposed Culture Park.
  • Add more places to walk and cycle. Overall, the proposal calls for about 4.5 kilometres of new boardwalk, 3.2 kilometres of new bike paths and improvements across 250 hectares of new and existing waterfront parkland. Designated routes and elevated boardwalks would also help protect dunes, shoreline habitat and other sensitive areas.

The Town describes the plan as an investment-ready framework, intended to coordinate public infrastructure while attracting private capital for projects that could support activity throughout the year.

Some investment is already beginning to take shape. Plans include a premium Marriott beachfront hotel and a Stonebridge Building Group mixed-use commercial and residential development.

The Town also says prospective partners have shown interest in projects contemplated for the first phase of the master plan. That includes Doppelmayr, whose potential involvement relates to transportation, recreation and aerial attraction concepts.

The broader goal is not simply to bring more visitors to Wasaga Beach. The community already receives more than two million visitors each year. Instead, the plan is intended to encourage longer stays and give people more reasons to visit outside the traditional summer season.

Per the news release, more than 16,000 residents, visitors, students, businesses and organizations participated in the planning process.

“This plan belongs to the people who helped create it,” Mayor Brian Smith said, describing a vision that could bring “more jobs, more investment, more opportunity.”

Ontario has already committed $38 million to Destination Wasaga, including $11 million for Beach Drive and $25 million for Nancy Island Historic Site.

The Town says the beach will remain public, while environmental protection and Indigenous engagement will continue as individual projects move forward.

The next step is implementation planning. That means working with provincial and federal governments, private investors and other partners to determine funding, complete technical studies and secure the approvals needed to turn individual pieces of the vision into actual projects.
