The announcement, made by MP Ryan Turnbull and Mayor Elizabeth Roy today, outlines plans to revamp Whitby’s Waterfront Trail, which is part of the expansive 3600-kilometer Great Lakes Waterfront Trail, which connects diverse municipalities and First Nations communities along the Great Lakes.
Per the new release, Whitby’s Waterfront Trail facelift encompasses extending over 600 meters of the current asphalt trail, refurbishing over 150 meters of boardwalk, and reconditioning 80 meters of the pedestrian bridge. Additionally, it promises to usher in regularly interspersed seating, rest zones, and viewing areas, along with wayfinding and interpretative signage, thereby crafting a space that’s accessible and safe for all age demographics.
The envisioned enhancements are aimed at amplifying the recreational and active transportation utility for locals and visitors alike and bolstering the commitment towards active, healthy living and fostering closely-knit communities.
“Redevelopment of the waterfront is a major priority for our community and for Whitby Council,” said Elizabeth Roy, Mayor, Town of Whitby in a statement.
“The Waterfront Trail is a popular attraction for residents and visitors who use it for sightseeing, walking, and biking. This funding from Infrastructure Canada will help ensure the trail continues to be a focal point of our waterfront, offering active transportation and recreation opportunities for Whitby and the many communities connected to us through the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail.”
The fiscal investment in this project, which intersects with the objectives of the Active Transportation Fund (ATF), sees the Government of Canada contributing $2,599,377, complemented by $3,900,623 from the Town of Whitby.
The ATF, underpinning Canada’s National Active Transportation Strategy, is deploying $400 million over five years from 2021 to enhance active transportation avenues, facilitating a safer, more delightful experience for those traversing by foot, bicycle, or other human-powered means across the nation.
