On Tuesday, December 11, a new Polar Bear Cub was born at Zoo sauvage de Saint-Félicien, Quebec.

This is the second polar bear cub born in the zoo within 14 days. Another polar bear cub was born on November 27. The birth of a second cub was a major surprise for the team at Zoo sauvage.

Signs of gestation are difficult to detect in polar bears and it was during a regular visit, the training and enrichment officer discovered the cub near the female, Milak on the surveillance cameras.

Milak, a 10-year-old female, arrived at the Zoo sauvage in Saint-Félicien on December 10, 2014, from Aalborg Zoo, in Denmark. The cub’s dad is 13 year-old Yelle. It is Yellé’s second baby as he is the father of the cub born on November 27.

The sex of the cub, which weighs about 0.2% of the 320 kg weight of its mother, will only be determined in a few weeks.

Mother and cub will be moved to the the brand new polar bear habitat at Zoo sauvage de Saint-Félicien in the spring of 2019.
