Cinco de Mayo: A Brief History

There is a common misconception that May 5th is a celebration of Mexican Independence Day. The events of May 5th in Mexico’s history did help contribute to this, the date actually commemorates a battle.

Cinco de Mayo is often called Battle of Puebla Day as it commemorates Mexico’s victory over the French during the Franco-Mexican war. The battle is significant since Mexican army was outnumbered by Napoleon III’s French army. And despite the odds, the Mexican army was victorious, forcing Napoleon’s troops to retreat.

Over the years, Cinco de Mayo developed into a day for other countries around the world to celebrate Latin culture and Mexican traditions.

Take in and celebrate with these Cinco de Mayo parties and events in Calgary.
