To address the lack of off-leash areas in certain neighbourhoods, the city of Edmonton has announced its innovative Pop-up Dog Parks program.
With a plan to establish 19 temporary dog parks, this initiative aims to cater to communities currently underserved by existing off-leash spaces.
According to the news release, the city identified neighbourhoods with a high need for off-leash areas through Phase 1 Public Engagement survey. To ensure smooth implementation, the city consulted with Community Leagues, utility companies, and other internal stakeholders to avoid conflicts with ongoing projects or existing recreational facilities.
Starting from mid-May and operating until November (weather permitting), the Pop-up Dog Parks will provide a temporary haven for dogs and their owners.
Each Pop-up Dog Park will be equipped with dog waste bags and dispensers, garbage cans, and clear signage outlining the responsibilities of dog owners as well as clearly marked boundaries. Residents can also reach out to 311, the city’s helpline, for any immediate inquiries or concerns regarding the Pop-up Dog Parks.
By implementing these temporary parks, the city aims to bridge the gap in off-leash areas and cater to the needs of neighbourhoods where such spaces are lacking.
Residents are encouraged to provide feedback on their experiences through an online survey or paper surveys available at the various Pop-up Dog Park locations. This feedback will help shape future iterations of the program. The feedback collection will continue until October 1.
