The Steveston Salmon Festival, a beloved event in Richmond, is making its grand return for its 76th year on Canada Day.

After a hiatus in 2020 and scaled-down celebrations in 2021 and 2022, this year’s festival promises to be a full-fledged celebration of the community’s spirit.
Stretching from Britannia Shipyards to the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, the visitors are welcomed to revel in a day brimming with live music, exhibitions, hands-on activities, and exciting demonstrations. The much-awaited Canada Day parade will once again fill the streets with cheer.
The tradition of the Salmon Bake will also make a return, with limited pre-order tickets now available. Other notable attractions include the Chow Mein Booth, the Japanese Cultural Show, the Art Show, and Sammy’s Fun Zone.
The day will wrap up with a mesmerizing fireworks display at 10:15 p.m. at the Imperial Landing.
What to expect at the Steveston Salmon Festival on Canada Day 2023:
Steveston Salmon Festival
- Pancake Breakfast: Starting at 8:00 a.m. in the Steveston Community Centre parking lot, visitors can enjoy a delicious pancake breakfast before the parade commences.
- Kids’ Bike Parade: Children can cycle the parade route to cheers and encouragement from the crowd before the floats take off, starting at 9:30 a.m. from the Gulf of Georgia Cannery parking lot.
- Canada Day Parade: The parade will make its triumphant return, starting at 10 a.m. The procession will begin at Garry Point Park and travel to Railway Ave. and Moncton Street.
- Art Show: Local artists will showcase their work at the Multipurpose Room in the Steveston Community Centre from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on July 1st.
- Chow Mein: The Chow Mein booth, a festival favourite, will be open from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (or until sold out!) for visitors to enjoy.
- Food: A wide range of food options will be available, including offerings from local restaurants, food trucks, and community food stations. Visitors can explore diverse cuisines and taste locally-made delights.
- Horticulture Show: The Multipurpose Room at the Steveston Community Centre will host a horticulture show.
- Japanese Cultural Show: This show will showcase the contributions of the Japanese Canadian community to the fabric of Steveston. Visitors can enjoy martial arts demonstrations, traditional cultural arts, and performances.
- Salmon Bake: A beloved tradition, the Salmon Bake will take place in-person on the festival grounds. Pre-sale tickets are available to avoid long lines on the day. Each meal includes salmon, bun, potato salad, chips, and soda or water.
- Sammy’s Fun Zone: Located at the Steveston Community Centre Playground, Sammy’s Fun Zone offers entertainment for all ages, including live performances, face painting, crafts, inflatables, and carnival games.
- Spirit of Steveston: Visitors can enjoy food trucks, refreshments, and local performers on the main stage. Adult beverages will be available for purchase.
- Youth Festival: The Youth Zone in SalmonFest promises an array of excitement, including a carnival midway, arcade game trailer, inflatables, concession stands, and a chill-out zone.
- Celebratory Fireworks: The festival will conclude with spectacular fireworks at Imperial Landing at 10:15 p.m.

What: The Steveston Salmon Festival is returning for its 76th year on July 1st, featuring a full program and parade for the first time since 2019. The festival celebrates the spirit of the community with live music, exhibitions, demonstrations, and hands-on activities. The Canada Day parade will showcase over 70 floats, making it the largest in the region. Highlights include the Art Show, Chow Mein booth, Horticulture Show, and the Japanese Cultural Show. There will also be a Kids’ Bike Parade, Pancake Breakfast, Salmon Bake, Sammy’s Fun Zone, Spirit of Steveston, and a Youth Festival with games and inflatables. The day concludes with celebratory fireworks at Imperial Landing.
