If you are looking for an easy and fun day trip from Edmonton, Sherwood Park, or St. Albert, then Sturgeon County can deliver in a few ways. There is a lot to see and do this summer in Sturgeon County: you can enjoy natural areas with a walk or a bike ride, with a canoe or kayak, and a swim or a dip. There is hidden adventure everywhere in this central-Alberta area, too, with skate and BMX parks, paintball, fishing tours, and the BUMP motocross park.

Boisvert’s Greenwoods Self-Guided Tour
The especially important and protected forest at Boisvert’s Greenwoods is great for a pleasant walk through the shade on a sunny day. But they are especially great for wildlife and their natural habitats. There is also a wetland area in the trees where you can spot frogs. Listen during your walk as the trees and wetland also attract several songbird species; and watch during your walk as you could spot a moose or deer trying to find their own shade.

Lily Lake Resort

Jurassic Forest
Take a family walk with the dinosaurs this summer! Jurassic Forest, just outside of Gibbons, takes you way back in time along a boardwalk path from which you can spot creatures and critters in the forest. The impressive animatronic dinos are hidden in the forest around the path, so it is up to you and your family to ensure you spot them all. At the park’s entrance you can play mini golf, play in the park, and have a small picnic from the concession.

Picnic at a Provincial Park
Grab the blankets, the food, and the lawn games, and try one of the two Provincial Parks in Sturgeon County for your next picnic! Redwater Provincial Recreational Area and Lois Hole Centennial Provincial Park is a great family destination for the day: on top of a picnic, you can get out and explore the trails, watch for wildlife, and relax in nature.
Summer Village of Sandy Beach
Sandy Lake is easily seen from AB-624, and when you pull off the highway on the east side of the lake, you’re greeted with the Summer Village of Sandy Beach. Spend the night in their campground, and enjoy the Village all weekend-long, or stop in for the day enjoy the beach. Along the beach are a brand-new playground, picnic sites, shelters, and a convenience store/concession.
Spray Parks
The heat is already on for summer in Alberta and luckily Sturgeon County has two public splash parks where you and your kids can cool off: Poplar Spray Park Gibbons and Morinville Splash Park. Both spray parks have picnic areas, washrooms, and places where you can escape into the shade.
Extreme Sports
For those looking for adventure or for those looking to sharpen their skills there are two places where you can do both in Sturgeon County. The Legal Skatepark is a 5000 square-foot facility where you can practice or teach skateboard and scooter skills. Morinville’s Bob Foster Extreme Sports Park is a bit larger, so you have room to not only skate and scoot but also to ride your BMX.

Bellrose River Walk
You can bike or hike the Bellrose River trail just north of St. Albert and enjoy the sights and sounds of the natural area. There are 1.9km of paved paths taking you along the north bank of the Sturgeon River. This is a narrow and slow part of the river, but the paths can take you up above the water and provide a great view of the valley.

There is a convenient fishing spot where the Red Water and North Saskatchewan Rivers meet: just below the bridge you can cast off and catch possible

U-Pick Flowers
Berries are not the only things that you can pick. Pick seasonal flowers and join for flower arrangement classes at Birchwood Meadows. This u-pick garden features over 35 varieties of flowers and greens. There is also a flower market where you can find the perfect bloom, both from the farm and sourced from other Canadian growers.

There are several places in sturgeon County where you can get a good game of golf in with the family or friends, swing practice, or a tasty meal. Sturgeon County’s prairie landscape, along with the creeks, hills, and small river valleys make for stunning northern courses.

Paintball
Challenge your friends and family to an exhilarating afternoon of friendly competition at one of Sturgeon County’s two paintball ranges. SPG is a few minutes’ drive north of Morinville where they offer three different maps to play on, with a Cops and Robbers Game coming soon. Rampage Paintball, in Redwater, has six different fields to play on where you can duck behind the trees, old cars, buildings, or use Airsoft guns instead.

Canoe and Kayak Adventures
Guide yourself down the smaller and narrower Sturgeon River, or around Sturgeon area lakes, for a relaxing ride on a canoe or kayak; or take a mapped-out route provided by Rural Rivers Rentals who offer a pick-up and drop-off point for your boats, shuttle service, and parking.

Swimming
Turn the heat down with a dip in a pool or nearby lake this summer. The town of Redwater is looking to reopen their outdoor public pool as soon as possible, but while you wait you can head to one of the beaches close to Sturgeon County like Wabamun Lake Provincial Park, or Thunder Lake Provincial Park.

Gibbons’ Pioneer Days
This years’ Gibbons Pioneer Days are a-go! The festivities begin on July 9th with a parade through town in the morning and conclude with fireworks on the night of July 10th. And this year you can enjoy a drive-in movie with popcorn available for pre-order (showing is Jurassic Park).
Canada Day Celebrations
Three Sturgeon County towns will host Canada Day Celebrations: Morinville, Legal, and Gibbons. Morinville and Gibbons are both hosting full-day events around town, while Legal isboth celebrating with fireworks shows between 10:30 and 11pm on July 1st.

Hike the Red Ribbon Trail
The Red Ribbon Trail is a 5km-long path which sits atop abandoned coal mines and winds through Cardiff Park. Your walk or jog can take you past ponds and wetlands, small, forested areas, and the path comes to an end at a playground. The entire walk can take up to two hours and lets you see a glimpse of rural Alberta’s beauty.
Legal Mural Walk
Get the best of the town of Legal and Alberta art by walking the Legal Mural Walk. Your tour can begin at the fire hall on Main Street which is surrounded by six murals; the tour moves north and east with many of the murals between 46th and 50th Streets. Ville de Legal was a French settlement, so many of the murals pay homage to French settlers of Canada, as well as the modern culture of Legal, and other historical depictions.
Barry’s Ultra Motorsports Park
Are you dying to get out and go fast, or try racing for the first time? A short drive north of Sturgeon County and Sandy Lake will take you to BUMP: Barry’s Ultra Motorsports Park; here you can rent ATVs, UTVs, or dirt bikes for the day. Get on your vehicle of choice and traverse one of six tracks in the park. They ask that you call ahead before you leave to ensure space.
