Nova Scotia will increase the minimum wage to $15, 6 months earlier than scheduled, as the province accepted recommendations from the Minimum Wage Review Committee.
The current minimum wage in the province is $13.60, which came into effect last October.
The minimum wage was set to increase to $14.30 on April 1, 2023, $14.65 on October 1, 2023, and $15 on April 1, 2024.
Now, following the recommendations from the committee, the minimum wage will rise to $15 on October 1st of this year.
The province will also increase the minimum wage annually based on the national consumer price index (CPI), plus an additional one per cent, effective April 1, 2024.
The press release reads, “if CPI is four per cent on April 1, 2024, the minimum wage will increase to $15.25, based on April 1, 2023, minimum wage of $14.50 plus five per cent.”
Nova Scotia says an average of seven per cent of workers, or about 28,500 Nova Scotians, worked for a minimum wage from April 2021 to March 2022. Minimum wage earners in the province work primarily in retail trade, food and accommodation industries.
