Alberta today introduced Utility Commodity Rebate Act that will provide an electricity rebate and a natural gas rebate for residents.
The government is replacing Natural Gas Price Protection Act with Utility Commodity Rebate Act ( Bill 18) as it does not allow for rebates on electricity bills. The new legislation will also let both rebates appear on bills for eligible consumers in the coming months.
According to the news release, Albertans will receive $150 in total electricity rebates over three months ($50 for three months in a row) under Electricity Rebate Program for those whose electricity use is under 250 megawatt hours per year. The government says this covers most residences, farms and small businesses.
The Natural Gas Rebate Program will provide rebates on natural gas bills when regulated natural gas rates exceed $6.50 per gigajoule between Oct. 1, 2022 and March 31, 2023. Further details on this rebate are yet to be announced.
Kenney administration says it will work with utility providers and regulators to apply the Electricity Rebate directly to eligible bills as soon as possible and the Natural Gas Rebate Program is currently scheduled for launch in the fall.
Associate Minister of Natural Gas and Electricity, Dale Nally said in a statement, “We know increased costs are affecting the well-being of Albertans, and our government is taking real action. This legislation is necessary to deliver electricity and natural gas rebates to help nearly two million Albertans. We’re providing short-term relief while creating long-term improvements that will make the utility system more affordable down the line.”
The government says they will release more information on each rebate program before the payments begin.
