Alberta Raises Benefits by Six Per Cent to Match Inflation; Here Is How Much You Can Expect

Alberta today released the details of how much AISH and Income Support benefits will be increased effective Jan. 1, 2023.

The measure, announced last week by premier Danielle Smith, is part of Alberta’s efforts to address cost-of-living due to inflation.

How Much Will You Receive:

AISH, Income Support, the Alberta Seniors Benefit and Alberta Child and Family Benefit rates will be adjusted by six per cent to match the rate of inflation. Going forward, these programs will continue to be indexed with inflation.

Examples of monthly benefit rate changes for Jan. 1, 2023 (from the news release):

Benefit increases are based on the consumer price index for 2022 and benefit rates vary depending on Albertans’ needs, household composition and other factors.

Examples based on the maximum core monthly benefit rates for single people with no children:

  • $1,685 to $1,787 – AISH
  • $745 to $790 – Income Support (expected to work)
  • $866 to $919 – Income Support (barriers to full employment)
  • $286 to $303 – Alberta Seniors Benefit

The increased benefit payment for annual totals, based on whether a family has anywhere from one to four children, is as follows:

  • one child – $120
  • two children – $198
  • three children – $260
  • four children – $307

The provincial government will invest about $45 million in 2022-23 and $173 million in 2023-24 to support indexation of the AISH, Income Support, and Alberta Seniors benefit programs, and about $7 million in 2022-2023 and $35 million in 2023-2024 to support the indexation of the Alberta Child and Family Benefit.

When Will You Receive:

As per the news release:

  • Albertans receiving AISH and Income Support benefits will see this increase in their January payments, which will be distributed on Dec. 22.
  • Recipients of the Alberta Seniors Benefit will see this increase on their January cheques.
  • Recipients of the Alberta Child and Family Benefit will see an increase in their first quarterly payment in February 2023.

The government says every month about 72,000 people receive AISH, 45,000 receive Income Support, 176,000 seniors receive Alberta Seniors Benefits and between 185,000 and 190,000 families access the Alberta Child and Family Benefit for financial support.

Danielle Smith said in a statement, “The affordability crisis has made life more difficult for seniors, families with children and Alberta’s most vulnerable citizens. Everyone struggling needs to know that they are not alone. Our government is increasing benefits to help make life more affordable and ensure all Albertans can afford the rising costs of life’s necessities.”

Holy reading some of these comments whether it be from angry AISH clients that are actually able to work or just hard working albertans, are pretty rough and seem to put those of us unable to work in a box. I wish I could work again. I worked from age 14-17 part time while in school then full time from 18-37 yrs old (12 hour shifts as a nursing attendant) and 8 hrs daily as a stylist and then occasionally from 38-43 years old as a stylist from home as I injured myself badly working as an NA and have several comorbitities that physically make it impossible for me to do so (surgeries every 4/6 weeks from 2017 onwards) and now have to have 4 separate major surgeries for 4 separate reasons and a rare blood disorder along with seizures now. Not all of us are drug addicts or alcoholics either. I stay at home and take care of my cat although I now will need to get help taking care of me with a recent spinal injury. We aren’t all degenerate losers as it seems some people think. I’d trade spots with someone who could walk 10 feet without falling or without having daily seizures and vomiting blood daily and to not be on the autism spectrum in a heartbeat, even if I had to go back to working 12-18+ hrs a day 6 days a week. I’m almost 50 and physically I am probably more like 85+. I implore you to not judge what you do not know as we all have a different story.

Some people should just stop acting like victims and be happy and grateful for Canada for having a program like AISH, other Communist Countries don’t have such programs. No social programs where disability benefits programs are a reality. Yeah, I am on AISH as well. I work to make my bills be paid on time. You set up a back up “What if” emergency plan. I don’t tell anyone or broadcast how people should feel sorry for me like I see here. So go ahead and apply for MAID, you would be doing the world a favor. Tired of hearing from other AISH clients here whining. Better yet, just MAID yourself by buying some Meth with high doses of Fentanyl and than lights out. I want to hear from people here are grateful for what they have. It’s no wonder why others have a low opinion or stigmatize those on AISH as government whining free loading bug cases. I say start budgeting better or get a job through a temporary agency and take initiative to improve your financial situation better. I do my best. Was injured three times already in the past 6 months. Close to critical too. Dislocated shoulder and two ankle injuries but I didn’t complain. I rested up and healed up. I am only 50 now but I don’t let pain get in the way. I certainly don’t whine about it either. Neither should anyone else here for that matter.

Because look at how many people screw them for benefits, when there’s no doubt, get a bloody job losers. Just because you know how to complain don’t mean you know anything. Because you stupid idiots are stuck on the end of a bottle or crack pipe. You ruin quality of life for everyone. Think of the sacrifice we all make just so you can act like a bitch. If it looks like a bitch, acts like one, or sounds like one, then Guess what? Nobody cares?

Aish Workers get a Complete Fail.
The Language Barrier is Beyond Ridiculous and these same Aish Workers are Deciding if we Qualify for Aish, How Much We Get and due to Incompetence and Uneducated Aish Workers, Government of Alberta Employees, get to TELL US WHEN AND WHAT DATE WE WILL BE COLLECTING BACK PAY OF AISH INCOME AND BENEFITS BECAUSE THESE EMPLOYEES DON’T HAVE A CLUE OF WHAT THEY ARE DOING, DRAG OUT THE APPLICATION PROCESS BIG TIME AND ACT LIKE ITS THEIR MONEY, COMING OUT OF THEIR POCKETS, TO PAY US WHAT WE DESERVE.
I applied on August 1st 2022 and I was on Aish since 2006 but I had to leave Alberta because my mom passed away, and I had to stay and take care of my 83 year old Dad until he passed away and I moved back to Calgary Alberta and Aish tells me that I have to REAPPLY for Aish Again because I was taking care of my dying Father out of province.

Everyone in this Government needs to be fired and a New Plan and New, Educated, English Speaking, Intelligent Government of Alberta Employees especially Aish Employees Need to be Qualified to do Their Job Properly, instead of making Disabled People of Alberta REAPPLY for Aish, and Drag Out The Application Process for over 8 Months and then TELL ME THAT THEY ARE ONLY PAYING ME BACK FOR 3 MONTHS and if I don’t like it, I should Appeal it. Like WTF? It’s like Telling Me to Go to Hell.

All phone calls are RECORDED and I have never ever been DISRESPECTED by anyone in my entire life as I have, FROM AISH AND ALBERTA WORKS EMPLOYEES. MAKES ME SICK.
I have busted my balls working outside in the far Northern Alberta my entire life and after 20 plus Large Surgeries I have to deal with IGNORANT PEOPLE like this to obtain Aish?
The high amount of TAXES I have paid my entire life is paying their WAGES RIGHT NOW and they are so IGNORANT 99.99% of them don’t even know this.

Another thing is that I applied for Aish on 3 Separate Times since August 1st 2022 and Aish is aware of this and has even mentioned this in RECORDED TELEPHONE CONVERSATIONS and another thing is, Aish screwed around for 8 months and I didn’t hear from ONE AISH EMPLOYEE and I wasn’t able to SPEAK TO ONE AISH EMPLOYEE FOR 8 MONTHS.

But as soon as I mailed a Letter to The Premier’s Office and the Minister of Health and Human Services, I had a PHONE CALL FROM A AISH EMPLOYEE WITHIN 3 BUSINESS DAYS.
      Like what the hell?
Additionally, I applied the first time for Aish on August 1st 2022 and this Aish Worker tells me that I’M ONLY GETTING BACK PAY FOR 3 MONTHS AND NEVER EVEN BROUGHT UP ABOUT HOW MUCH CASH I HAVE PAID FOR PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS FOR THE PAST 8 MONTHS, AT $400 TO $500 PER MONTH, AND NOT ONE PERSON ASSISTED ME WITH ANYTHING FOR 8 BLOODY MONTHS.
I HAVE THE SAME BILLS AS THEY DO BUT I DON’T DRINK OR DO DRUGS LIKE MANY OF THEM DO.
( FACTS FROM INSIDE SOURCES )
I spent the REST OF MY SAVINGS, and I had NO PROVINCIAL DISABILITY FOR 3 YEARS AND I HAD TO PAY FOR ALL MY MEDS AND MY BILLS ON $1,100 PER MONTH WHILE TAKING CARE OF MY DYING DAD. I WASN’T ON A HOLIDAY.
I even asked this Aish Worker “”” WHAT DOES AISH MEAN “””” DUUUUU NO ANSWER.
AISH MEANS ASSURED INCOME FOR THE DISABLED.
      Simple right?
So what or who the hell is making all of these RULES and DECISIONS on HOW MUCH WE RECEIVE AND FROM WHAT DATE?????
I hope every Aish Worker, Alberta Works and the Government of Alberta READS everything I have said here, because everything I have said is the TRUTH and BS…….
Another thing Aish FORCED ME TO DO IS take one of my Union PENSION Early because there is no way in hell I would have survived for 8 months waiting to hear from Aish and that was after I contacted the Premier’s Office and told the TRUTH and I’m getting a Lawyer and getting in touch with the MEDIA.

Then I received a phone call 3 days later.
AISH HAS AND STILL IS RIPPING ME OFF BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN DEDUCTING DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR OF WHAT THEY ARE GIVING ME MINUS WHAT I RECEIVE FROM MY PENSION PLAN RETIREMENT FUNDS I PAID AND WORKED FOR AND AISH FORCED ME TO TAKE MY PENSION EARLY BECAUSE I HAD NO MONEY FOR ANYTHING AND NOW AISH IS PUNISHING ME FOR THIS AND SCREWING ME FINANCIALLY TOO.

GUESS WHAT AISH AND ALBERTA GOVERNMENT I HAVE DECIDED TO HAVE THE MEDIA LOOK AT ALL OF MY EVIDENCE OF MY RECORDS OF HOW AISH AND ALBERTA WORKS DID NOTHING FOR ME FOR 8 MONTHS AND I NOW PLAN LEGAL ACTION ALSO.
WATCH THE NEWS BECAUSE ITS GOING TO SHOW TRUE COLORS OF AISH EMPLOYEES AND THE GOVERNMENT OF ALBERTA 2023.
      Cheers

What a hole this is. If you can’t afford to have kids then don’t have them. People in Alberta and Canada that work hard and make a good income have to pay for this shit. It’s all ass backwards. Losers

I netted 30,800 lat year working full time. hahhahaha!!! I am not eligible for the inflation benefits as i am a SINGLE. a USELESS SINLGE!! I am not considered vulnerable by this fabulous AB Government because families, seniors and people on any sort of government assistance are REVERED in these lands. a single is USELESS, INVALID, INADEQUATE of any assistance what-so-ever. Period Full Stop. i want to be part of the vunerable seniors and families – families as small as one parent and one child- whom can earn 180K – to be clear- onehundred and eithy thousand dollars, and still claim 600$ for each and every child they have. THAT IS VULNERABILLITY. Pease Ms Daniel SMITH, Please provide me the contact # for MAiD.
(Have intense ADHD, Borderline Personality Disorder, MDD, and GAD. I am not eligible for anything. not disability tax credit, not aish, i could not even latch on to 308$ welfare to save my one eviction , due to the federal government phoenix pay system DISASTER. 0.00 paycheques for working full time – for a period of 10 weeks. Welfare was able to LOAN me 187.00 I still got evicted and HAD TO PAY BACK THE $187.00
Had i at least one tot bounding on my hip, id have been able to score free damage deposit, free 1st month’s rent, food cards for 6 months and free prescriptions for a year. – the PARENT also benefits form the benefits the tots afford them.
This blatant SYSTEMIC DISCRIMINATION BASED ON FAMILY STATUS is driving thousands to apply for MAiD as soon as it expands eligibility in March this year <3

It’s a bit better but still not near the cost of living which is actually higher for people with these disabilities on special diets that need treatments and therapy that aren’t covered. Our medical treatment for everyday issues shouldn’t be decided by pencil pushers. Eg Even for ADHD they only cover addictive stimulant medication that doesn’t work for a lot of people. And if you want to use any of your benefits more paperwork and my doctor says I have to pay for any of the forms I need for every med, benefit getting chiropractor etc its overwhelming. Like somehow a doctor prescribing it because you need it medically isnt good enough and some bureaucrat with no medical degree or empathy it seems gets to decide if we get medication that works or just the cheapest med that might work for that illness thats covered no mTter the side effects (as if the ridiculously long AISH application wasn’t hard enough to fill out and describe in detail all the worst traumatizing stuff that happened in my life and exactly how it has horribly affected me stolen my future and causes me suffering every single day doing that was soo hard and tbey dont help you even when you get an AISH worker its always more paperwork like they cant see its not easy for us and we cant afford to drive. I had a transplant compartment syndrome 10 surgeries my abs were removed I’m in constant pain for 11 years now along with PTSD ADHD FASD Anxiety depression and on and on….. but I was rejected the first time I applied because like an insurance company they found that because there would be more surgery in the future to manage my disaster of an abdomen when my intestines were ha ging out of bkdy below my belly button. But they twisted that to mean maybe after another surgery I could just go back to work. I never could its Impossible. They make it so hard.

The CERB thing was a slap in the face it was basically them admitting that we get paid less than the basic amount you need to live in by several hundred dollars.

Not to mention according to them we are never allowed to be happy & have to suffer alone till we die off. Because they walk right past the law that governs what common law is and you don’t even have to be living with someone you don’t even have to be sleeping with them. It could be a family member. Even if your renting a room or basement suite & pay your own rent bills and food just like to a syranger but are related to you AISH assumes your family is paying and can pay for you and you dont need benefits. & If they decide (by just asking neighbour’s family members(who you may not be close to or don’t get along with so they could lie to hurt you by getting benefits cut off) but if there’s a rumor and 1 person says they think your In a relationship with someone they decide that it is a thing that no other citizen is as wr have normally have single common law or married to choose from. but they made a special category. The “ADULT INTERDEPENDENT RELATIONSHIP” & appRarently if you date the other person is automatically supposed to and is able or willing to totally support you pay your way and rent and food and meds and be willing to hand over their tax info plus they’ll go back find out when you started dating and charge you for any benefits you received amd expect you to pay it back as if you robbed them like a criminal.
It’s inhumane it’s not the 50’s where you just get supported by your parents and then By whoever your married to.
Not only can’t I have kids but after finding this out I realized u ness I’m a gold digger which I dont have in me and find some stuck who is desperate enough to pay for everything from the word go I also can’t ever live with a partner. I can never ever get married and if I date someone and aish finds out about it they could demand their tax info and cut off all my benefits for meds that stop me from literally dying and charge me with fraud. The only thing that brings any comfort once your normal.life has ended and you have to depend on AISH is the love and care of another human. I don’t have a career anymore that’s all that’s left what’s the point of living without the hope of love? but if we all look at the fine print every single person on AISH will see they could be screwed over if they piss someone off & they call and lie and say your in a relationship nevermind hoping if you do date or live together they never find out about it!!!

That is inhumane and I’m wondering if there isn’t something that could be done about it someone I could write to.
Like when the there is a whole court system that uses standards for common law of years together before it affects anything a bad rumor could leave me out on the street and they jump at any chance to suspend or cut you off do they would love that… even though I look like I was hit with a grenade launcher in the stomach & obviously qualify. And your “AISH WORKER” WEll you never even meet them you don’t get help or assistance they just direct you to drag yourself all over the city getting more and more paperwork when it’s a struggle to live and take care for ourselves in the first place.
Or how they can cut you off for spending a few weeks I. The hospital as if when you went in you didn’t have a place with your stuff in it you still have to pay for. But they cut you off till your released at which point u less you had someone to move all your stuff while you were sick into storage you not only have to find a new place but find a bed and couch and TV because yours is gone.

So much is a make more work make more paper project for the government to justify jobs and say they are helping when the needed help isn’t actually going to clients. Think of the man hours that come from the amount of doctors visits and paperwork you need to get and apply for a benefit that it says is provided. When it should just be that your doctor deemed it necessary and prescribed it & your insurance covers it. Cutting out a bunch of cost and supplies and maybe they could actually help and give support to clients instead of making it so hard to get and stay on esp if you cant afford a car insurance and gas(which in a place where it below -30 often & disabled peoe are well disabled they havr more barriers to fulfilling their constant demands that many people just give up and die…. it’s too much what they ask too little what they give a lack of support were made to feel worthless were already suffering now we cant have a relationship struggle to survive and take care for ourselves &
if we try to be happy it’s treated like a crime. It’s not like welfare or EI where some eople choose not to work and use that instead we aren’t choosing to be lazy it’s so bad medically physically mentally we literally can’t through no fault of our own!!! And there should be coverage for therapy and me tap health care to get the people who can be helped and just need the tools to heal and stabilize and can end up back at work contributing and not feeling useless and like they are trapped alone till they die…. the government needs to use a little empathy and be realistic. It’s bad enough that I’m kind of glad I probably won’t make it to 65 because after that if you only get what you paid into CPP you have nothing to live on I’m 34 my accid3nt was at 22 so while I was making great money I think I would get about $200/month for cpp. So glad I won’t be around for that!!!

Households making $180,000 a year are eligible. That would equal 2 adults making $45.00 P/hr.
      Income Support equals $5.35 P/hr.
I think the combined family income should be lowered.
As someone on Income Support I receive less than $11,000 per year, $180,000. They are not even close to being in the same ballpark.

Well that’s wonderful. As someone on alberta works. I keep getting rejected from aish and I’m still working on it. But the fund amount is a joke. I suffer from chronic suicidal thoughts, severe Schizophrenia and psychosis. I’ve got ADHD and ADD. And I’m on the spectrum of autism. 790 isn’t gonna last me shit. I also have medical disorders that prevent me to work. I’ve stayed with alberta works because they at least accepted me but the amount being raised by only so little is like putting a hello kitty bandaid on a broken arm and saying it’s healed. Their raising it because 2023 is allegedly going to be more expensive. All this bullshit stress is man made. Lower the cost of standard groceries or lower taxes. Give people more money back when they donate bottles or plastic. The government is setting us all up for homelessness and we people who are unable to make a good income are suffering the repercussions of the ones who use the system. I don’t care if anyone disagrees with me I’m speaking my peace. This planet has devolved so badly that suicide rates are getting higher and higher because to be fair. Earths only just survivable now. I hope those who are struggling end up finding their luck and light. We deserve to be treated better.

I previously wrote to u in the beginning of December about the housing benefit missing aish people now not only r we missing the housing benefit but when the epidemic hit for all 3 years we were cut out of all those payments as well and don’t u think the sick and more vulnerable people would need it the most, but no people that were still making money were able to get more like the ones on EI and the ones the people on aish couldn’t get any of that money either, its like the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. so now this housing benefit came out and we missed that as well by a whole 220 dollars, is there something wrong here people, and so u come to a conclusion to help aish, income support and old age by a whole hundred dollars a month, cause that makes up for the 14000 that people received for cerb and now another 500 for a housing benefit and we get 102 dollars a month, plz explain to me how that makes any sense to any of the people like me on aish. I had to move cause my rent was 1000 and my bills went up to 900 a month that didn’t include my 2 children, food, and every other monthly expenses. I fell way behind and cause of all that I have 3 things added to my credit bureau cause I couldn’t pay them, and now where I’m living I haven’t even told them yet that I haven’t got the electricity in my name yet cause I can’t find any company that will hook it up for me. so the property management has been paying it and they don’t even know yet , can’t wait to see what that bill is and how I’m gonna pay it and than figure out what company will let me put me under there power company. A whole $102, does anyone anywhere try and put urself in our shoes and see what we go through, not just our mental disorders or other psychical reasons we have to deal with every single day of our lives but, we also get pushed to the button of the barrel, for people just sit there and wait till we die off or kill ourselves cause the stress and depression we r put through!!!

It’s sad to see only $102.00 more. With the one time payment of $500.00 wood be great but as it stands we are $220.00 dollars over so we don’t qualify that is so wrong.

6 per can’t???? U are kidding how is this going to help people on AISH people who can not work because of illness then their is the onetime house thing but how convieniant people on AISH are 220 dollars over from receiving this as well this is Canada yet disabled people are being thrown under the bus and forgotten again wow 6 percent to help with the cost of inflation sad sad

One-time top-up to the Canada Housing Benefit program. It doesn’t seem that this is going to help albertans on the Aish program. On the Federal government website it states that singles making $20,000 or less per last year’s income tax can apply. Aish recipients received 1685 per month maximum multiply that by 12 and you get 20,220. That means people on aish make $220 too much to even apply to get the one time help of $500. Please somebody correct me if I’m wrong. But if this is the case it’s another kick in the teeth for people with disabilities.

Thank you for this increase. It is VERY much needed!
But this amount does not in ANY way give you a LIVING INCOME in the ever increasing cost of EVERYTHING.

The raise in AISH is such a huge help it may only be 102$ a month but that 102$ is a big difference when you are living on such a smaller amount already 1685$ may seem like a lot to some but those of us that are living on it will tell you it’s not a big amount to try and live off of. So thank you to the Government for realizing that this is needed for us to live.
