Thinking about a fun way to spend your weekend? Calgary’s Big Rock Brewery is turning 40, and they’re marking the milestone with a party loud enough to shake the taps.

Big Rock Brewery
On Saturday, September 13, the brewery’s Barn Burner music festival returns, promising a night of craft beer, live music, and plenty of stomping boots.
The lineup is stacked with homegrown talent. Things kick off at 4 p.m. with Calgary’s own Kue Varo & the Only Hopes. Blending art-rock grit with dreamlike folk, the band, fronted by Kue Varo alongside Bob E.Q., Matt Doherty, and Easy H.D., brings a sound that’s equal parts dust storm and daydream.
By 5:30 p.m., the stage belongs to Daniel Romano’s Outfit. Known for high-voltage performances and a reputation that’s followed them through festivals from Bonnaroo to Roskilde, the band thrives on unpredictability. Romano leads the charge with Carson McHone, Tommy Major, Ian Ski Romano, and sound engineer Kenneth Roy Meehan, creating a live experience often described as mesmerizing and explosive.
The night’s closer, JUNO winner Matt Mays, takes over at 7 p.m. With a career stretching from alt-country beginnings in The Guthries to acclaimed solo albums like Coyote and Dog City, Mays has built a catalogue as wide-ranging as it is celebrated. His 90-minute set promises a mix of anthems and deep cuts, rounding off the festival in style.
Tickets cost $57.30 (children 12 and under are free), with doors opening at 3 p.m. The amps shut down at 9 p.m., but not before Big Rock Brewery proves that turning 40 doesn’t mean slowing down, it means cranking the volume.
The party goes down at Big Rock Brewery, 5555 76 Ave SE, Calgary.
