The LCBO will phase out single-use paper bags from its retail stores to reduce its impact on the environment and create a more sustainable Ontario.
LCBO says the initiative will eliminate nearly 135 million paper bags annually, saving 2,665 tonnes of waste from the landfill and equivalent to more than 188,000 trees each year.
Customers are encouraged to bring their own reusable bags while shopping, or they can purchase a reusable bag or request a re-used cardboard box or an 8-pack carrier at no cost.
Starting May 24, LCBO will offer a reusable cooler bag for sale for a limited time.
“Fifteen years ago, we took the lead to remove single-use plastic bags from our stores. Now, the removal of single-use paper bags is another important step in our efforts to minimize our impact on the environment,” said George Soleas, President & CEO, LCBO. “
Additionally, the announcement coincides with the conclusion of LCBO’s Shine Sustainably campaign, which focused on their partnership with Tree Canada to plant one million trees in Ontario via reforestation programs, community tree grants, and partner planting initiatives.
Per the news release, LCBO customers and employees donated over $820,000 to Tree Canada through in-store contributions to support community planting and forest-building projects.
