The City of Calgary has introduced ChargeYYC, a pilot initiative aimed at helping residents of multi-residential buildings install electric vehicle (EV) chargers.
Starting September 24, 2024, residents living in condos, apartments, and townhouses can apply for funding of up to $4,000 to develop an EV charging installation plan. This plan, known as the EV Charging Road Map, must be created by a licensed professional such as a Professional Engineer or Master Electrician in Alberta.
This plan is tailored to the unique needs of each multi-residential property, addressing the complexities of installing EV chargers in shared spaces. Eligible recommendations may include the installation of Level 1 and Level 2 chargers or electric vehicle energy management systems (EVEMS). The city hopes this will pave the way for increased EV adoption by reducing upfront costs for building owners.
According to Mariam Bello, Mobility Policy Engineer for the City, removing barriers to charger installation in these buildings is essential for supporting Calgary’s transition to electric vehicles. Motor vehicles account for 33% of the city’s annual greenhouse gas emissions. ChargeYYC is part of Calgary’s broader effort to reduce emissions, in line with the Calgary Climate Strategy’s goals of transitioning to low or zero-emission vehicles.
The first phase of ChargeYYC focuses on funding the development of customized EV charging plans for multi-residential buildings. In 2025, the program will shift to offering financial incentives to support the actual installation of charging infrastructure, based on the recommendations from the initial plans.
To qualify for the rebate, properties must have three or more residential units, shared electrical services, and must be fully constructed. Each property is limited to one rebate, regardless of the number of buildings or units.
