Foodies rejoice, as there are many ways to celebrate new or local food in Calgary this May. Over the month of April, a handful of new and notable cafes, sweet shops, and restaurants opened around the city.

These new eateries in Calgary provide a number of cuisine options, too, from dessert and pastries to authentic Korean food, breakfast foods, ice cream, and cocktails. Foodies may also want to mark their calendar for the upcoming May food festivals and events in Calgary.
Recent Restaurant Openings
Dough Boy
Dough Boy has gone ahead and shown us all the magical things you can do with doughnuts. The new desert shop opened up near the Highland Park neighbourhood and Edmonton Trail with an ultra-sweet menu of doughnut creations. These are considered market-style doughnuts served hot with your choice of toppings.

Baek Jeong
This local Alberta eatery has two locations in Edmonton, and now two in Calgary! Baek Jeong celebrated the grand opening of their second Calgary location on April 29th in the Glamorgan neighbourdhood. They are known for delicious Korean barbecue dishes and hearty cuisine.

Egg Club
The goal of Egg Club, and their many Canadian locations, is to offer affordable, delicious, and simple takeout that leaves you full and satisfied. They started Egg Club in Toronto, and are slowly expanding around the country with Calgary as the newest location. The spot offers Japanese style egg sandwiches for takeout, with options for delivery on the usual apps.

Seoul Café
This new Korean café in Kensington provide a unique in-person dining experience with a décor style that makes you feel like you’re in a comic book or cartoon. But beyond the atmosphere and décor, Seoul Café offer a cozy place to enjoy items like lattes, cake, coffee, tea, espresso, or cookies.

The Office Restaurant & Bar
The case with The Office Restaurant & Bar is that the interior atmosphere and restaurant vibes are the opposite of what the name might suggest. This is a place to escape The Office, and enjoy a warm, California-inspired dining experience. The food is also west-coast inspired and included an array of seafood snacks or meals. They also serve sandwiches, pizza, and tacos.

Hunny’s
Calgarians have a new place to cool off this summer but can visit the new Hunny’s ice cream shop as of now! Hunny’s has been open for about a month now and have already dropped their feature ice cream flavours for May. These include flavours like miso caramel, cereal milk, and black sesame (which is dairy-free!).

Hanyang Korean Restaurant
Hanyang Korean Restaurant recently opened to provide Calgary with an authentic Korean dining experience. A key feature of their menu is their authentic Korean soup selection, and the rice that is always cooked fresh. Together, these items create the feature dish, gukbap.

May Food Events in Calgary
La Pizza Week
La Pizza Week is a North America-wide event simply meant to celebrate all the best of pizza in different cities. Each location will have a pizza on special to try for the event; and in Calgary, there seven participating pizzerias! These include Lina’s Italian Market, Pizza Maru, City South Pizza, Famoso, Melrose, Uncle Faith’s Pizza, and Pizzaface YYC.

Calgary International Beerfest
The Calgary International Beerfest, one of the top five largest beer festivals globally, features over 200 craft breweries and distilleries showcasing over 700 beers, spirits, ciders, and meads. Attendees can enjoy Brew Master and Cooking with Beer seminars, explore the craft distillery industry, sample cuisine from over 25 restaurants, and enjoy music, DJs, sports screenings, and other entertainment.

Highfield Food & Beverage Market Fest
Among the Downtown Markets to take place beginning in May, The Highfield Food & Beverage Market Fest is among the one-weekend-only markets. The festival and market are in their second year in 2024 and aim to be bigger and better than the year before. This is a chance to explore dozens of local restaurants, cafes, breweries, or distilleries.

YYCaesarfest
Celebrate Canada’s National cocktail this May at Calgary’s annual YYCaesarfest. The two-day sampling event will feature local food, craft beer, and over 40 types of Caesars. There is an additional Sunday Brunch add-on option, too!

Mother’s Day Brunch and Dinners
Mark May 12th on your calendar for treating mom to a special day or night out! There are many options across Calgary for a fun day out together including the local attractions, weekend markets, the Bow River Valley, and the special Mother’s Day dining events.
- Brunch buffet is a great way to treat mom and the whole family, and there are several from Calgary’s hotels on May 12th: Fairmont Palliser, the Yellow Door Bistro in Hotel Arts, or Delta Hotels by Marriott Calgary South all offer brunch buffets.
- Make a day of it with Calgary’s attractions, including Heritage Park and the Calgary Zoo, offering Mother’s Day dining.
