Appointment bookings open March 31 for Calgary’s compost giveaway program.
The city’s compost giveaway is back for its eighth year, offering free compost made from food scraps and yard waste collected through the Green Cart program.
This year’s pickup runs from April 13 to May 30, with appointments required. Booking opens March 31, and time slots will be released in phases. Early dates between April 13 and May 2 can be reserved right away, while later slots in May open on April 28 and May 12.
Pickup happens at two locations: the Shepard landfill in the south and the Spyhill landfill in the north. Both operate Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Each household can collect compost only once and is capped at 100 litres. Residents are also expected to come prepared with their own shovel, gloves and containers. Trailers are not allowed, and mulch is not part of the program.
For those wondering what to do with it, the city notes compost is best used to improve soil rather than replace it. A small amount can go a long way in supporting healthier lawns, flower beds and gardens.
