Canada Welcomed Highest Number of Permanent Residents Ever in 2022

Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship announced today that Canada has surpassed the 2022 immigration target.

Canada welcomed 431,645 new permanent residents in 2022, the largest number ever welcomed in a year in Canadian history.

 

In 2021, 405,000 new permanent residents arrived in the country. The 2021 numbers surpassed the previous high numbers set in 1913 when more than 400,000 immigrants arrived in the country.

In 2022, the country also processed more than 4.8 million applications including citizenship and temporary and permanent residence visas.

The federal government has set a target of granting permanent residency to 465,000 in 2023, 485,000 in 2024 and 500,000 in 2025.

According to the 2021 Census, nearly 1 in 4 people were landed immigrants or permanent residents in Canada, the highest proportion since Confederation and the largest proportion among G7 countries.
