Toronto is gearing up to celebrate a momentous occasion on March 6th – its 190th anniversary.
This event will be commemorated with a stunning drone show at Casa Loma, set to begin at 8:00 pm. The night sky above this historic castle will come alive with drones illuminating the darkness, creating a breathtaking visual narrative of the city’s iconic landmarks and celebrated figures.
This event is a collaborative effort by Celebrate Toronto, Illumin Drone Shows, and Casa Loma, inviting residents and visitors to experience a unique celebration from the castle grounds and the surrounding neighbourhood.
The festivities continue on March 9th, 2024, with the Celebrate Toronto festival at Nathan Phillips Square, running from 3 to 10 pm. This event, organized by the non-profit Celebrate Toronto, is designed to honour the city’s rich history, vibrant present, and bright future.
The city, originally named York, was rechristened Toronto on March 6, 1834, and has since evolved from its modest beginnings to become the capital of Ontario and a sprawling metropolis covering 630.2 square kilometres and 2.8 million people. The change to Toronto was motivated by the desire to establish a distinct identity separate from New York City and other localities named ‘York,’ and to shed any negative associations with its erstwhile nickname, “dirty Little York.”
William Lyon Mackenzie served as its first mayor, leading a city that has grown in size and stature since its incorporation.
