The affected product is sold in 900-gram packages with the UPC 6 25691 21034 9 and best before dates of 26 NO 13 and 26 NO 14. Distribution includes Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, and Saskatchewan. The product is being removed from the marketplace as a precaution.

Consumers are advised not to consume, use, sell, serve, or distribute the recalled chia seeds. If the product is in your home, it should be thrown out or returned to the store where it was purchased. Anyone who believes they became ill after consuming the product is encouraged to contact a healthcare provider.

Salmonella contamination is not always detectable. The food may appear and smell normal but can still cause illness. Symptoms can include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. In more serious cases—particularly for young children, pregnant women, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems—infections can be severe and sometimes fatal. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.

The recall was triggered by a similar action in another country. At this time, no illnesses have been reported in Canada related to the product.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is conducting a food safety investigation and is verifying that recalled products are being removed from store shelves. The agency notes that the investigation could result in additional recalls if other affected products are identified.
