LUZIA takes audiences on a vivid, surreal journey through an imagined Mexico. First premiered in April 2016, the show combines poetic storytelling with acrobatics, paying tribute to Mexico’s landscapes, traditions, and mythology. Guided by the elements of light (“luz”) and rain (“lluvia”), the production explores encounters between a parachuted traveller and a kaleidoscope of dreamlike characters.
What to Expect
- Innovative Use of Water: LUZIA is Cirque du Soleil’s first touring show to incorporate water into its acrobatics, featuring a rain curtain and a submerged stage basin. Performers use water in acts such as the Cyr Wheel, where artists spin and glide in the rain.
- Acrobatic Feats with a Twist: Traditional circus elements are reimagined—hoop diving is performed on twin treadmills, creating moving targets for performers leaping through hoops just 75 centimeters wide.
- A Mosaic of Mexico: The show transitions fluidly through settings such as deserts, oceans, and dance halls, blending cinematic nostalgia with cultural references like lucha libre wrestling and Day of the Dead festivities.

- Striking Performances: Highlights include a contortionist twisting into near-impossible poses, aerial strap acts over cenote-like waters, and jugglers manipulating up to seven clubs at once.
- Rich Visuals and Symbolism: Scenes pay homage to monarch butterflies, marigolds, and Otomi embroidery, reflecting Mexico’s vibrant artistic heritage and spiritual depth.
A Celebratory Finale: The production culminates in a communal feast where all characters reunite, symbolizing unity through the fusion of Mexico’s diverse cultural and natural influences.
