City of Calgary Cancels All Events Through August 31

imageMayor Nenshi has announced that the City is cancelling all public events and festivals through August 31 to limit the spread of COVD-19.

All Calgary festivals were effectively cancelled as of yesterday, when Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw confirmed that gathering restrictions currently in place also apply to all one-time or annual summer events, including arts and culture festivals, agricultural fairs and rodeos, major sporting championships and industry conferences.

Today, the City also announced that it is cancelling permits for third-party events that were set to be held on City land through August 31.

According to the news release, the City will continue to reevaluate this decision and the August 31 date could be extended in consultation with the Province’s direction and Alberta’s’ ability to flatten the curve.

Festivals and events are estimated to contribute more than $600 M to the local economy per year.

Yesterday, The City of Calgary announced that it will be issuing a $1200 fine for disobeying Public Health Orders.
